The present invention provides compositions and a process for the preparation of porous bipolar plates with pore volume density and pore size that can result in high water uptake by the plates while providing the desired resistance against gas permeation. The combination of porogens (pore-forming agents) with specific types of graphite particles and polymer binders provides the desired characteristics. The porous bipolar plates have high electrical conductivity and flexural strength.

Material compositions and methods for porous graphite-polymer composite bipolar plates

The invention relates to elastomeric compositions containing filler particles that are predominantly two-dimensional in shape. The elastomeric compositions exhibit significantly improved thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties as compared with elastomers containing conventional fillers such as natural clay, carbon black, and carbon fiber. In addition, the elastomeric compositions of the invention exhibit improved resistance to solvent-induced swelling and to unwanted permeation of gases such as hydrogen sulfide. The invention also provides a method of forming such elastomeric compositions and methods of using such elastomeric compositions to prepare elastomeric articles with improved resistance to thermal, chemical, and mechanical stresses.

Filled elastomers with improved thermal and mechanical properties

A packer unit to be used in an annular blowout preventer. The packer unit includes an elastomer body including a compound of a nitrile rubber base polymer having a polymer chain, and a quantity of fluorine atoms attached to the polymer chain. The compound includes between 50 and 60% of the nitrile elastomer, between 25 to 35% carbon black, and the rest includes other materials. The quantity of fluorine atoms comprises short-chain fluorocarbon chain molecules The quantity of fluorine atoms displaces at least an equal quantity of hydrogen atoms from the polymer chain when the elastomer body is fluorinated.

Short-chain fluorocarbon-grafted elastomer blowout preventer packers and seals for enhanced H2S resistance

Solid, or highly viscous, organic electrolytes consisting of alkylimidazolium cation with alkyl, PEGylated and fluorinated side chains of different molecular weights were synthesized and characterized (cf. chemical structures in Schemes 1 and 2). The PEGylated/fluorinated imidazolium iodide is a solid organic electrolyte that has a conductivity of about 2&#xd7;10S/cm at 30&#xb0; C. The ionic conductivity could be significantly increased (1.11&#xd7;10S/cm at 30&#xb0; C. and S/cm at 2.88&#xd7;10at 90&#xb0; C.) by blending the PEGylated/fluorinated imidazolium iodide with another solid electrolyte, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide (EtMImI). The PEGylated imidazolium iodides synthesized in the present work have conductivities in the range 1.6&#xd7;10S/cm to 2&#xd7;10S/cm at 30&#xb0; C. and viscosities in the range 620 cP to 720 cP at 30&#xb0; C. The iodide counter ion in the present electrolytes supplies the anion for the I/Iredox mediators for DSSCs. Therefore, the organic electrolytes of the present invention can be used even without the addition of inorganic salts such as LiI or KI. We found that the addition of an organic solid electrolyte, EtMImI, resulted in an increase in the ionic conductivity of the PEGylated/fluorinated imidazolium iodides, whereas the addition of the inorganic LiI led to a decrease in ionic conductivity. All the electrolytes are thermally stable until high temperatures (250&#xb0; C. to 300&#xb0; C.).

In particular, the nanostructured copolymer material comprises plurality of chains substantially parallel to each other, each conductive chain comprising a plurality of conductive polyacetylene polymer blocks positioned along the chain and a plurality of polar poly(vinyl alcohol) polymer blocks in between the polyacetylene polymer blocks to form a pattern of alternatively repeating polyacetylene polymer blocks and poly(vinyl alcohol) polymer blocks and a ratio of polyacetylene polymer to poly(vinyl alcohol) polymer to provide the nanostructured copolymer material with conductivity of at least 1 S/cm. In some aspects, the invention relates to photoelectric devices comprising a nanostructured copolymer material and capable to convert light to electrical current.
