A radiating air-dielectric coaxial cable for plenum applications comprises an inner conductor; a non-halogenated dielectric spacer around the inner conductor; and a single, continuous, outer conductor surrounding the dielectric spacer in direct contact therewith. The outer conductor has apertures along its length for the passage of electromagnetic radiation. At least one layer of inert, flame-retardant barrier tape is wrapped over the outer surface of the outer conductor so as to cover each of the radiating apertures of said outer conductor to prevent the dielectric spacer from flowing out through the radiating apertures when the dielectric material is melted. A jacket of halogenated, highly flame-retardant polymer is extruded over the wrapped layer of barrier tape.

Radiating coaxial cable for plenum applications

A connector assembly for a coaxial cable having an outer conductor and an inner conductor includes a center conductor. A flaring ring and a clamping member are disposed adjacent to each other, and the outer conductor of the coaxial cable is engaged between the back end of the ring and the end of the clamping member. A body member holds the flaring ring and the clamping member together with the outer conductor of the cable located therebetween. A coupling nut, secured to the body member and disposed around the center conductor, is used to engage the connector with a mating connector. A conductive insert positioned within the body member provides electrical contact between the flaring ring and a mating connector. The connector assembly further includes a dielectric insulator, disposed between the center conductor and the conductive insert, for centering the center conductor with respect to the conductive insert and for electrically isolating the center conductor from the conductive insert. The clamping member, the body member, and the coupling nut are fabricated from polymeric materials, and the conductive insert is fabricated from an electrically conductive material.

Lightweight connector for a coaxial cable

A fluid detection system includes a cable which is capable of being dried easily after coming into contact with the fluid being detected and displays a measurable change in characteristic impedance immediately upon contact with the fluid. The cable comprises an inner conductor and a cylindrical outer conductor disposed in a substantially parallel and coaxial relationship with each other with a dielectric detection layer coaxially disposed between the inner and outer conductors. The outer conductor is of an open braided construction which permits easy passage therethrough of the fluid to be detected. The detection layer comprises a pair of solid dielectric elements stranded around the inner conductor in a double helical configuration and defining an air gap between the two conductors which is adapted to retain the fluid so as to measurably change the characteristic impedance of the cable. A coating of dielectric material is provided around the solid inner conductor, the thickness of which can be controlled to adjust the change in characteristic impedance resulting from the presence of fluid within the dielectric layer. The improved cable construction allows the dielectric layer to be dried quickly even after the cable has been immersed in the fluid so that successive fluid detection measurements may be made without delay.

A radiating cable of the foam dielectric type is provided with increased flame-retardant capabilities by provision of an inert barrier tape between an apertured, corrugated outer conductor and the external jacket surrounding the conductor. The barrier tape is composed of non-halogenated, self-extinguishing insulating material and is wrapped over the outer conductor in such a way as to completely cover the radiating apertures disposed thereupon. The barrier tape prevents the melting and bubbling of the dielectric foam outwardly through the radiating slots into penetrating contact with the external jacket when the cable is subjected to high-intensity flames, without significantly affecting the transmission characteristics of the cable.
