The invention relates to a complex comprising a magnesium dihalide and an electron donor. It is a complex of the magnesium dihalide and the electron donor and has the formula (I):MgX&#xb7;[R(OR')]&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)wherein MgXis the magnesium dihalide and R(OR&#x2032;)is the electron donor, X is a halogen, R is an n-valent C-Caliphatic group, an n-valent C-Caraliphatic group or an n-valent C-Cacylic group, R&#x2032; is a C-Calkyl group or a C-Caralkyl group, n is a number from 1 to 6 and m is defined as a number 0.5&#x2266;m&#x2266;2.0. The invention also relates to the preparation process of such a complex, as well as the use thereof for the preparation of olefin polymerization catalyst components.

Soluble magnesium dihalide complex, preparation and use

The invention relates to a new process for the preparation of an olefin polymerization catalyst component, as well as a new polymerization catalyst component and its use. In the process, a magnesium dialkyl or diahlide or alkyl alkoxide is reacted with an alcohol and the reaction product is reacted with an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid dihalide and a titanium tetrahalide. Especially good catalyst activity and morphology are achieved by using a polyhydric alcohol such as ethylene glycol.

Disclosed is the homogenous reaction at 40-200&deg; C. of MgX,&minus;nR,OH (where n&equals;2.0-6.4) with TiX,and a higher (C,-C,) alkyl ester of a carboxylic acid, optionally in the presence of a solvent. In such a completely homogenous reaction, no carrier appears. In order to obtain a product in the liquid stage, the molar ratio between the ester and the MgX,.nR,OH should be at least 0.8/j wherein j is the number of carboxyl groups in the ester. If the ester has two carboxyl groups, for instance, j is 2 and the molar ratio should be at least 0.8/2, that is, 0.4.

An olefin polymerization catalyst composition is prepared by adding an organometallic compound of a group IA to IIIA metal to a procatalyst containing a support impregnated with TiCl.sub.4 but without using free TiCl.sub.4 to impregnate the support. The procatalyst is prepared by stirring a carrier with magnesium dichloride and a titanium tetralkoxide in a hydrocarbon solvent containing an electron donor, evaporating the solvent and the donor to form a free-flowing powder and chlorinating the titanium tetralkoxide with an alkyl aluminum chloride.

Method of preparing catalyst composition for polymerizing olefins

A procatalyst composition which is suitable for the homo- and copolymerization of alpha olefins together with an organometallic cocatalyst compound and which is prepared by treating an inorganic carrier with a component system containing a complex of a magnesium halide and a tetraalkyl titanate, and a chlorinating compound which does not contain a transition metal compound. In order to raise the Mg:Ti ratio, the component system additionally contains an organomagnesium compound.

The present invention relates to a procatalyst composition for the polymerization of alpha-olefines, which has been prepared in steps, in which is arranged a carrier agent based on at least one inorganic oxide, having few or no hydroxyl groups on its surface, and the carier agent is reacted with the magnesium compound and one or more transition metal compounds of the groups IVB and VB of the periodic table. It has been observed that such a catalyst is most-advantageous when a) this carrier agent is impregnated with a mixture of the Mg compound and one or more compounds of a transition metal of the groups IVb or Vb of the periodic table, which dissolves the Mg compound, and b) by chlorinating with a compound that does not contain titanium so that 1) the carrier is first treated with a mixture in the form of a solution of the Mg compound and the transition metal compound and the product thus obtained is chlorinated, or 2) the carrier is first chlorinated and subsequently treated with the above mixture in the form of a solution, or 3) the Mg compound and the transition metal compound are impregnated into the carrier without any separate dissolving and the product thus obtained is chlorinated.

A problem in the conventional olefin polymerization catalyst systems, the procatalysts of which are based on a solid carrier and a titanium compound and an electron donor on its surface, is that unsufficiently high activities are achieved by the morphology of the carrier. Moreover, the active age of such a catalyst in the polymerization is too short. These problems have now been solved by the olefin polymerization catalyst system according to the invention, the procatalyst of which comprises a solid carrier and a layer on its surface consisting of a titanium compound, a magnesium compound and an electron donor. The advantages of the invention become more emphasized when using monocyclopentadienyl titaniumtrichloride as the titanium compound.
