The disclosed computer-implemented method for preparing email databases for analysis may include (1) identifying an email database that stores a plurality of emails in a plurality of tables that are formatted to be managed by a specific email application, (2) using a component of the specific email application to retrieve the plurality of emails from the database, (3) creating a denormalized dataset for the plurality of emails by combining email data from at least one table from the plurality of tables with email data from at least one other table from the plurality of tables, and (4) exporting at least a portion of the data from the denormalized dataset into at least one file in an interoperable format that is capable of being read by a plurality of applications. Techniques for recovering a virtual machine are disclosed. In one particular embodiment, the techniques may be realized as a method for recovering a virtual machine comprising the steps of selecting a first backup copy of a virtual machine in a first data store, selecting a second data store; enabling use of the virtual machine by reading from the first data store and writing to the second data store, selecting a second backup copy of the virtual machine, and migrating the virtual machine from the second backup copy to the second data store.

In one embodiment, a backup application transmits a remote request to a virtual machine that includes an application to be backed up. The request solicits metadata from the application that describes a structure of the data stored by the application on the virtual storage devices of the virtual machine. Using the metadata, the backup application may identify objects within the virtual machine. Accordingly, a granular restore of data to the virtual machine may be possible without installing backup software within the virtual machine.

A scanning manager scans the file systems of virtual machines running on a base computer. In order to scan a virtual machine, the scanning manager identifies the file on the base machine that represents the virtual machine, freezes the virtual machine, and creates a snapshot thereof. The scanning manager restarts the frozen machine, and starts the snapshot. The files of the snapshot are mapped at a virtual machine level, and the resulting file mapping information is used to scan the files of the virtual machine at a base machine level. The scanning can comprise scanning for malicious code, such as virus signatures. The scanning manager can scan one, multiple or all virtual machine(s) running on the base computer, in conjunction with a full or partial scan of the base computer, or independently.

The files of the file system of the snapshot are mapped at a virtual machine level, and the resulting file mapping information is used to backup the files of the virtual machine at a base machine level. The mapping information is current as of the instant the snapshot was taken. The backup manager can backup one, multiple or all virtual machine(s) running on the base computer, in conjunction with a full or incremental backup of the base computer, or independently.

A method, system, and computer program product that enable integrated scheduling and management of frozen images for backup and recovery purposes. Frozen images are created, cataloged, and managed in accordance with a backup policy including a schedule for generating frozen images. Minimal data are saved to allow fast synchronization of the persistent frozen images with production data, and frozen images are cataloged in a catalog that may include entries for other types of backups to provide a single source of information for all backups of production data.

A deleted snapshot of a data volume may be reconstructed from an existing snapshot and one or more modification logs. For example, modifications to the data volume that occur subsequent to creation of a first snapshot may be logged in a modification log. If the first snapshot is deleted, the first snapshot may be reconstructed by modifying a second snapshot, created after the first snapshot, according to the modification log in order to undo any modifications made to the data volume prior to creation of the second snapshot and after creation of the first snapshot.
