Techniques are disclosed relating to implementing a statement-level INSTEAD OF trigger. In one embodiment a computer system stores trigger information associated with a statement-level database trigger executable to initiate execution of at least one trigger instruction for a database instead of performing a particular database operation, on a database view, specified by a database operation statement. The computer system receives a first database operation statement specifying performance of the particular database operation on the database view and identifies a set of target rows, within the database view, targeted by the first database operation statement. In addition, the computer system generates a reference table associated with the database view, where the reference table includes rows corresponding to the target rows. The computer system executes the statement-level database trigger instead of executing the database operation statement, where executing the statement-level database trigger includes accessing the reference table.

Statement-level instead-of database triggers

Techniques are disclosed relating to implementing database trigger firing criteria to reduce unnecessary trigger firings. In one embodiment a computer system stores trigger information relating to initiating execution of at least one trigger instruction for a database, in connection with a particular database operation specified by a database operation statement. The trigger information includes a set of one or more database field identifiers for a set of one or more fields in the database. The computer system receives a first database operation statement and makes a determination that at least one field within the set of fields is not specified by the first database operation statement. Based at least in part on the determination, the computer system initiates execution of the at least one trigger instruction.

Techniques are disclosed relating to constructing a delta transition table for a database trigger. A computer system may store trigger information identifying a database trigger having a set of routines to be executed after an update operation has been performed on the database table. The computer system may perform a particular update operation that includes updating one or more rows of the database table. As part of performing the particular update operation, the computer system may construct a delta transition table that includes an original version of the one or more rows prior to the particular update operation and an updated version of the one or more rows resulting from the particular update operation. Subsequent to performing the particular update operation, the computer system may make the delta transition table available to the database trigger to facilitate an execution of the set of routines.

In accordance with embodiments, there are provided mechanisms and methods for creating, exporting, viewing and testing, and importing custom applications in a multitenant database environment. These mechanisms and methods can enable embodiments to provide a vehicle for sharing applications across organizational boundaries. The ability to share applications across organizational boundaries can enable tenants in a multi-tenant database system, for example, to easily and efficiently import and export, and thus share, applications with other tenants in the multi-tenant environment.

Systems and methods for exporting, publishing, browsing and installing on-demand applications in a multi-tenant database environment

A database with virtual partitioning. A computer system used to implement the database receives a request for a database operation to be performed on data stored in a portion of the database, where the data has a group of logical partitions (e.g., tenants of a multi-tenant database), and where the portion of the database is not further physically partitioned. The computer system identifies a virtual partitioning scheme for the database operation, the virtual partitioning scheme defining sub-groups of the group of logical partitions. The computer system then performs the database operation for the sub-groups defined by the virtual partitioning scheme. Multiple virtual partitioning schemes can be active at the same time, and virtual partitioning schemes can be created dynamically in some instances.

The present disclosure is directed to updating a multi-tenant database concurrent with tenant cloning. In some embodiments, a computer system receives a request to perform an update operation on a multi-tenant database. The update operation includes updating database entries for a plurality of tenants. Responsive to receiving the request, the update operation is initiated. Performing the update operation includes accessing a list identifying database entries awaiting the updating. During the accessing of the list, the update operation holds a lock. When the lock becomes available for acquisition, a clone process is permitted to create, during performance of the update operation, a clone of a tenant's data within the database.

For instance, such an exemplary system having a processor and a memory therein includes means for operating a multi-tenant database system having customer data stored therein for a plurality of distinct customer organizations; maintaining a plurality of tables within the multi-tenant database system to store the customer data, in which one or more of the tables is partitioned into a plurality of table partitions; receiving a database query specifying a command term to restrict a specified table accessed pursuant to execution of the database query by a partition_id parameter; parsing the database query to identify the command term specified; parsing the database query to identify any part of the received database query corresponding to the specified table within the multi-tenant database system to be restricted by the partition_id parameter; generating a new structured query language statement to execute against the multi-tenant database system in fulfillment of the database query received, in which the new structured query language statement accesses only a sub-portion of the specified table corresponding to exactly one table partition of the specified table having a partition ID matching the partition_id parameter; and executing the new structured query language statement against the multi-tenant database system. For instance, such an exemplary system having a processor and a memory therein includes means for operating a multi-tenant database system having customer data stored therein for a plurality of distinct customer organizations; receiving a database query specifying a dynamic macro function call to be executed at runtime and replaced with a string within a new structured query language statement to be executed against the multi-tenant database system; parsing the database query to identify the dynamic macro function call specified; parsing the database query to identify a functional expression to be evaluated at runtime as passed with the dynamic macro function call specified; generating a new structured query language statement to execute against the multi-tenant database system in fulfillment of the database query received, in which the new structured query language statement includes the string in place of the dynamic macro function call or a functional call executable by the multi-tenant database system at runtime to be resolved to the string by the multi-tenant database during execution of the new structured query language statement; and executing the new structured query language statement against the multi-tenant database system. Systems and methods for hosting variable schema data such as dynamic tables and columns in a fixed physical database schema. Standard objects, such as tables are provided for use by multiple tenants or organizations in a multi-tenant database system. Each organization may add or define custom fields for inclusion in a standard object. Custom fields for multiple tenants are stored in a custom data column within the object data structure, and this single custom data column may contain different data types for each tenant.

For instance, such an exemplary system having a processor and a memory therein includes means for operating a multi-tenant database system having customer data stored therein for a plurality of distinct customer organizations; receiving a database query specifying a command term to conditionally execute a sub-portion of the database query when a Boolean evaluation specified with the database query resolves to true and to negate execution of the sub-portion of the database query when the Boolean evaluation resolves to false; parsing the database query to identify the command term specified; parsing the database query to identify any part of the received database query corresponding to the sub-portion of the database query to be conditionally executed or negated pursuant to the Boolean evaluation; generating a new structured query language statement to execute against the multi-tenant database system in fulfillment of the database query received, in which the new structured query language statement includes a semantic structure to execute the sub-portion of the database query when the Boolean evaluation resolves to true and to omit from execution the sub-portion of the database query when the Boolean evaluation resolves to false; and executing the new structured query language statement against the multi-tenant database system.
