A switchless optical add/drop module (OADM) includes: a first variable optical splitter (VOS) for splitting a composite optical signal including a plurality of channels into a first portion and a second portion; a first multi-channel variable optical attenuator (MCVOA) optically coupled to the first VOS, where the first MCVOA blocks dropped channels of the first portion, transmits express channels of the first portion, and balances power levels of each of the transmitted express channels of the first portion; a second VOS optically coupled to the first MCVOA opposite to the first VOS for combining the transmitted express channels of the first portion and added channels; and a second MCVOA optically coupled to the first VOS, where the second MCVOA blocks express channels of the second portion, transmits dropped channels of the second portion, and balances power levels of each of the transmitted dropped channels of the second portion.

Optical add/drop multiplexer utilizing variable optical attenuator

An optical apparatus functioning either as a multiplexer or a demultiplexer, including: a first polarization beam splitter (PBS); a second PBS optically coupled to the first PBS along an axis of the apparatus; a half-wave plate optically coupled between the first and second PBS; a common optical port optically coupled to the first PBS at a face intersecting the axis; a first non-common optical port optically coupled to the first PBS at a face not intersecting the axis; a second non-common optical port optically coupled to the second PBS; and a reflection interferometer optically coupled to the second PBS. The apparatus provides the benefits of using the reflection interferometer, but does not require paired reflection interferometers or Faraday rotators.

Optical multiplexer and demultiplexer apparatus utilizing multiple polarization beam splitters and reflection interferometers

The present invention provides a multi-functional separator which may be used as a demultiplexer or as a multiplexer in wavelength division multiplexed optical communication systems. The preferred embodiment of the multi-functional separator includes a first polarization beam splitter, a non-reciprocal rotator; a reciprocal rotator, a second polarization beam splitter, and a non-linear interferometer. Each of the polarizing input and polarizing output ports includes an optical fiber, a collimator, a birefringent walk-off plate and a non-reciprocal optical rotator. The multi-functional separator is easily aligned by adjusting the positions of each of the polarizing input and output port. Further embodiments of the present invention provide additional optical isolation, optical circulation, optical comb filtering and/or two-stage channel separation capabilities.

Multi-functional optical device utilizing multiple polarization beam splitters and non-linear interferometers

The present invention provides a reflection-type improved optical circulator. The reflection-type optical circulator includes at least one birefringent plate for receiving at least one signal light ray from a first port; and a mirror optically coupled to the at least one birefringent plate, where the mirror and the at least one birefringent plate causes the at least one signal light ray to be folded back upon itself, where the at least one signal light ray is directed to a second port. The optical circulator in accordance with the present invention is a reflection-type optical circulator, in which the paths of throughgoing light rays are folded back upon themselves. This minimizes the number of required optical elements and the resultant device size by using each optical element two times for each light ray. Furthermore, the reflection-type optical circulator in accordance with the present invention can facilitate the alignment of the optical ports to the remaining optical elements because all ports can be disposed within a tightly constrained geometrical arrangement at only one side of the device.

The present invention provides an improved wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) which utilizes a grating-based channel separator. The WDM includes an interleaved channel separator; and at least one channel separator optically coupled to the interleaved channel separator. The channel separator includes a grating. In a preferred embodiment, the channel separator also includes an alignment surface of the grating, a sleeve comprising a mount, the mount capable of contacting the grating, and an alignment plate coupled to an outer surface of the sleeve, wherein the alignment plate is capable of contacting the alignment surface of the grating. This grating-based channel separator affords a quick, easy, precise and reproducible positioning and alignment of grating block. Thus, the WDM is minimized in size while also reproducibly assembled with perfect alignment in a minimal amount of time.

A method for compensating for chromatic dispersion of an optical signal includes: receiving the optical signal from an input fiber; collimating the optical signal using a collimator; delivering the collimated optical signal to a Gires-Tournois interferometer; reflecting a chromatic-dispersion-compensated optical signal from the Gires-Tournois interferometer to the collimator; focusing the chromatic-dispersion compensated optical signal into an output fiber. The compensator in accordance with the present invention provides flexibility in producing periodically varying chromatic dispersion so as to compensate for unwanted periodic chromatic dispersion produced in an interferometric interleaved channel separator. Also, the compensator enables compensation of fiber optic chromatic dispersion.

Method, system and apparatus for chromatic dispersion compensation utilizing a Gires-Tournois interferometer

The present invention provides a chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion compensator utilizing a Virtually Imaged Phased Array (VIPA) and birefringent wedges to moderate chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion (PMD). The compensator in accordance with the present invention propagates the composite optical signal in a forward direction; separates the wavelengths in the band of wavelengths in each of the plurality of channels, where the each of the wavelengths in the band is spatially distinguishable from the other wavelengths in the band; spatially separates each wavelength of each band of wavelengths into a plurality of polarized rays; and reflects the plurality of polarized rays toward a return direction, where dispersion is added to the reflected plurality of polarized rays such that the unwanted chromatic dispersion and PMD are compensated. The compensator in accordance with the present invention provides simultaneous tunable compensation of chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion utilizing a single apparatus. A system which utilizes the compensator is thus cost effective to manufacture.

The present invention provides an improved switchable interleaved channel separator device. The switchable interleaved channel separator device utilizes an adjustable reflective non-linear interferometer, which performs both switching and wavelength polarization sorting functions, so that overall complexity of the device is reduced. Further, because the adjustable non-linear interferometer is a reflection element, signal light paths are folded back upon one another so as to realize an overall reduction in the device's size, as well as the capability of performing optical couplings predominantly or wholly at a single side or at adjacent sides of the device.

Switchable interleaved channel separator devices and systems

The present invention provides a method and system for providing a light source in an optical network. The method includes providing a multiple-wavelength light, and filtering the multiple-wavelength light into a plurality of separated wavelength bands for a plurality of channels. In the preferred embodiment, each of the separated wavelength bands is substantially centered about the wavelength of a respective one of a plurality of optical channels. The plurality of separated wavelength bands is stabilized and then provided to the optical network. The light source in accordance with the method and system of the present invention is designed to only output wavelengths that correspond to optical transmission channels while eliminating the rest. It suppresses possible mode hopping, thus maintaining the power stability of all channels. Since multiple wavelengths are provided in a single light source, the number of light sources required to service a network can be dramatically reduced, increasing efficiency and reducing the cost of equipment and time for maintenance as well.

A tunable chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope compensator that utilizes a Virtually Imaged Phased Array (VIPA), a rotating transmissive diffraction grating, and a mirror with different curvatures for different cross-sections is disclosed. The compensator in accordance with the present invention provides simultaneous tunable compensation of chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope utilizing a single apparatus. The amount of compensation is accomplished by rotating the transmissive diffracting grating and/or translating the mirror. A system which utilizes the compensator is thus cost effective to manufacture.

A reversible optical circulator has an optical switch that includes: an arm composed of piezoelectric material with first and second faces and first and second ends, an electrode coupled to the arm for providing a voltage difference between the first and second faces of the arm, a support coupled to the first end of the arm for fixedly supporting the first end, an object with a convex surface coupled to the second end of the arm, a polarization rotation element coupled to the second face of the arm, a first magnet proximately located to the object and the first face of the arm, and a second magnet proximately located to the object and the second face of the arm. By using this optical switch, the optical circulator has stable and reproducible operation, high switching speeds, and low sensitivity to slight optical mis-alignments.
