The invention provides a load determining system including a sensorized rolling element bearing in a hub unit for wheels. The bearing includes a first ring and a second ring as an inner ring and an outer ring. Either one of the first and second ring may be the inner ring, the other ring being the outer ring. The system includes at least one magnetic sensor attached to the first ring that interacts with a target wheel attached to the second ring. Further, the system includes a signal processing unit configured to receive the magnetic sensor output of the at least one magnetic sensor. The signal processing unit is configured to determine at least axial forces acting on the bearing based on the amplitude of the magnetic sensor output. It is proposed that a pitch wavelength of the target ring is 4 mm or less.

Load determining system for a rolling element bearing

A bearing unit for a vehicle wheel hub is associated with a rotation sensing device and an electromagnetic inductive coupling. The rotation sensing device comprises an impulse ring () secured for rotation with the rotatable race () of the bearing unit by means of a rotatable annular carrier (), and a magnetic/electric transducer () mounted to the stationary race () of the bearing unit by means of a stationary annular carrier () and operatively facing the impulse ring (). The electromagnetic inductive coupling comprises a stationary coil () electrically connectable to a power supply () and carried by the stationary annular carrier (), and a rotatable coil () electrically connectable () to an electric or electronic device mounted on the wheel. The rotatable coil () is carried by the rotatable annular carrier () and is electromagnetically linked to the stationary coil ().

Bearing assembly with rotation sensing device

Sensor assembly for measuring a load on a bearing having at least one bearing ring (), the at least one bearing being provided with a cavity () for holding the sensor assembly. The sensor assembly comprises a series mounting between opposing sides () of the cavity (), the series mounting comprising a piezoelectric plate () and a spring () with spring stiffness k. Alternatively, the sensor assembly further comprises a body () with mass in mounted between the piezoelectric plate () and the spring (), to allow simultaneous load measurement and health monitoring.
