A robotic surgical instrument comprising a shaft, an electrocautery end effector powered by an electrocautery element, and an articulation connecting the electrocautery end effector to the shaft. The articulation comprises: a first joint driveable by a first pair of driving elements which permits the electrocautery end effector to rotate about a first axis transverse to a longitudinal axis of the shaft; and a second joint driveable by a second pair of driving elements which permits the electrocautery end effector to rotate about a second axis transverse to the first axis. The electrocautery element is constrained to move around the first axis and constrained to wrap at least one full revolution around the second axis. The path of the electrocautery element between the shaft and the second joint symmetrically opposes the path of a first one of the second pair of driving elements between the shaft and the second joint.

Powering an electrocautery surgical instrument

A robotic surgical instrument comprising a shaft, an electrocautery end effector powered by a first electrocautery element and a second electrocautery element, and an articulation. The articulation connects the electrocautery end effector to the shaft, and comprises a first joint driveable by a first pair of driving elements, the first joint permitting the electrocautery end effector to rotate about a first axis transverse to a longitudinal axis of the shaft. The first joint comprises a pulley arrangement around which the first pair of driving elements and the first and second electrocautery elements are constrained to move, the first and second electrocautery elements having symmetrically opposing paths around the pulley arrangement. The first and second electrocautery elements are distinct from the first pair of driving elements.

In one aspect, a system includes a liquid transfer device having a housing having a pipette tip and a plunger assembly; and a reaction chamber, wherein the housing of the liquid transfer device is configured to sealably engage with the reaction chamber. In another aspect, a liquid transfer device including a housing having a pipette tip; and a plunger assembly disposed within the housing and the pipette tip, wherein a portion of the plunger assembly is configured to engage a fluid reservoir such that the plunger assembly remains stationary relative to the fluid reservoir and the housing moves relative to the plunger assembly.

System and apparatus for reactions including a liquid transfer device with an asymmetrical cross-section

A robotic surgical instrument comprising a shaft, an end effector, and an articulation connecting the end effector to a distal end of the shaft. The articulation comprises joints permitting the end effector to adopt a range of orientations relative to a longitudinal axis of the shaft. Pairs of driving elements drive the joints, the driving elements extending through the shaft to the joints. An additional element extends through the shaft to the end effector via the articulation. A resilient barrier inside the shaft extends over a cross-sectional area of the shaft, the pairs of driving elements and the additional element passing through the resilient barrier, the resilient barrier being in resilient contact with the additional element so as to provide a resilient force opposing movement of the additional element; wherein each driving element of the pairs of driving elements passes through a hole in the resilient barrier without contacting the resilient barrier.

An end effector includes an anvil and a cartridge assembly having a plurality of surgical staples disposed in a cavity defined therein. The cartridge assembly may include a movable driver or sled configured to deploy the surgical staple from the cavity into tissue. The surgical staple may include a linear leg and an arcuate leg extending therefrom. The linear leg may include a protruding portion to provide pressure to tissue captured by the surgical staple. A three-dimensional and/or self-supporting surgical staple may interlock its two legs upon deployment thereof.

A surgical instrument is configured for coupling with an instrument drive unit that drives an actuation of the surgical instrument and operatively supports the surgical instrument. The plurality of driven members is nested with one another. Each driven member of the plurality of driven members is coupled to a respective cable that is attached to the end effector. Surgical instruments, instrument drive units, and surgical assemblies thereof

A surgical stapling device comprises a housing and a plurality of cartridges that are coupled together to form a barrel that is rotatably supported within the housing. Each of the cartridges defines a plurality of staple pockets that support a plurality of staples. An anvil is pivotally coupled to the housing and is movable in relation to the barrel between an open position and a clamped position. A drive shaft extends through the housing and through the barrel and a pusher operatively connected to the drive shaft. The pusher is configured to translate through the barrel to eject the staples from the plurality of cartridges in response to actuation of the drive shaft. The barrel is positioned within the housing to align a first one of the plurality of cartridges with the anvil to eject the staples from the first cartridge upon movement of the pusher within the barrel through a first firing stroke and subsequently rotatable within the housing to align a second one of the plurality of cartridges with the anvil to eject the staples from the second cartridge upon movement of the pusher within the barrel through a second firing stroke.

A surgical system for selective connection to a robotic arm includes an instrument drive unit and a surgical instrument detachably coupled to the instrument drive unit. The instrument drive unit includes a first actuator, a linkage member having opposing first and second portions, and a drive member. The first portion of the linkage member is operatively coupled to the first actuator such that actuation of the first actuator moves the first portion in a first direction and the second portion in a second direction opposite of the first direction. The drive member is operatively coupled to the second portion of the linkage member. The surgical instrument includes a driven member operatively associated with the drive member of the instrument drive unit and an end effector operatively coupled with the driven member, wherein translation of the driven member effects a first function of the end effector.

A surgical instrument is configured for coupling with an instrument drive unit that drives an actuation of the surgical instrument and operatively supports the surgical instrument. The surgical instrument includes a housing, an elongate body extending distally from the housing, an end effector extending distally from the elongate body, and a plurality of driven members rotatably fixed and longitudinally moveable relative to the elongate body. The plurality of driven members are longitudinal moveable relative to one another. Each driven member of the plurality of drive members is coupled to a respective cable that is attached to the end effector. The plurality of driven members is configured for engagement with an instrument drive unit.

The first rotatable member is rotatable in response to translation of the first translatable member. The end effector is operatively coupled with the first rotatable member, wherein rotation of the first rotatable member effects a first function of the end effector.

System and apparatus for reactions

A surgical stapling device includes a housing and a plurality of cartridges that are coupled together to form a barrel that is rotatably supported within the housing. Each of the cartridges defines a plurality of staple pockets, each supporting a staple. An anvil is coupled to the housing and is movable in relation to the barrel between an open position and a clamped position. A guide shaft extends through the housing and through the barrel. The guide shaft supports a sled and a clamping member. The sled is configured to translate through the barrel to eject the staples from an active cartridge of the plurality of cartridges in response to actuation of a push rod. After firing staples from the active cartridge, the sled and the guide shaft are configured to index or rotate the barrel within the housing to move a second cartridge of the plurality of cartridges to the active position upon retraction and subsequent movement of the sled through a second firing stroke.
