A tracheostomy tube assembly comprises an outer tube and an inner cannula. The machine end fitting of the outer tube has a bore of circular section interrupted by two flats. The machine end fitting of the inner cannula has an external surface shaped to fit within the fitting on the outer tube and also has two flats aligned with the flats on the outer tube fitting. Tubes of different sizes or other characteristics have flats with different orientations such that only inner cannulae suited for a particular outer tube can be inserted in the correct tube.

Medical tube assemblies

An end fitting () is formed at the patient end of an inner cannula () for a tracheostomy tube () by punching small holes () close to one end () of an ePTFE shaft (). The end is then swaged to form an expanded region (') and a preformed tubular insert () of a thermoplastic material is inserted to cover the holes () on the inside. An outer part () of the same thermoplastic material is then overmolded on the outside of the shaftso that its material () flows through the holes () and bonds with the inner insert (), thereby securing the inner and outer parts together around the end of the shaft.

Tubes and their manufacture

An adjustable flange for a tracheostomy tube has a locking assembly () with two C shape clamp arms () and () hinged together at one end (). A lever () with a threaded stem () extends through the opposite end of one arm () and into a threaded aperture () in the other arm (). When the handle () of the lever () is inclined out of the plane of the locking assembly () it can be slid freely along the tracheostomy tube () for positioning. The locking assembly () is locked in position by rotating the handle () down to lie in the plane of the locking assembly. The flange () has two wings () and () connected with a central plate () by webs () and () of reduced width so that the webs flex to allow the wings to be lifted readily.

Medico-surgical tube assemblies

An obturator for a tracheostomy tube has a strap extending along its length between a nose at its patient end and a machine end with clips that fasten to a coupling on the tube. The strap has one web extending along its entire length and a second web extending orthogonally on one side of the first web to form a T shape section along the major part of the strap towards its patient end. This makes the patient end of the strap relatively rigid whilst its machine end is relatively flexible to enable the machine end to be twisted to release the engagement of the clips and to enable the obturator to be pulled out of the tube.

Obturators and tube assemblies

A tracheostomy tube obturator has a patient end nose protruding from the patient end of the tube. A passage for a guide wire extends through the nose of the obturator at an angle to its axis. The aperture through which the passage opens at the patient end of the obturator lies on a plane extending at right angles to the passage and inclined away from the normal to the axis of the nose by about 8&deg;.

Introducers and tube assemblies

A laryngeal mask assembly has a mask portion of elliptical shape formed by a mount and an inflatable member attached to the mount. The inflatable member is formed by heat bonding together opposite walls of a flat balloon and at the same time cutting an aperture through the walls, so as to form a central web within an outer inflatable ring. The central web is attached to a concave surface on the forward surface of the mount with the aperture in the web aligned with an opening in the mount.

Laryngeal mask airways and their manufacture

The mask at the end of a laryngeal mask assembly is made from a flexible cylindrical member having radially projecting ledges at each end. The ends of the cylindrical member are folded axially within the member to form an annulus with an inner rib formed by the contacting ledges. One side of the rib is located in a channel around an elliptical mount member at the patient end of a tube. The other side of the rib is located in a channel around a plate, which is attached to the mount member trapping the rib between the plate and the mount member so that a cuff is formed extending around the mount member.

A laryngeal mask assembly has a mask portion formed by a flexible bag enclosing a mount attached to the patient end of a tube. The bag is sealed to the mount around an opening at the patient end of the tube. The neck of the bag is sealed to the tube rearwardly of an opening from a inflation lumen by which the bag can be inflated to form a cushion on the forward surface of the mount. The mount is curved rearwardly around its outer edge and the bag also inflates away from the rear surface of the mount to provide an expandable cushion on the rear of the mount.
