There is provided a method for improving the efficacy and/or transdermal transport of topically administered pharmaceuticals and pharmacologically active compounds, said method comprising the step of incorporating the pharmaceutical or pharmacologically active compound in a carrier comprising an effective amount of one or more complexes of a phosphate derivative of a lipophilic pharmaceutically acceptable compound.

A process for removing contaminants from PET components by mixing ethanediol with the PET feedstock at a temperature about the boiling point of ethanediol and for a time sufficient to convert the polyethylene terephthate components to polyethylene terephthate polymers which are soluble in the ethanediol and form bis(hydroxyethyl)terephthalate and produce a product mixture thereof containing insoluble materials. The present invention is directed to improved processes for phosphorylation and compounds produced by the improved processes. The improved process for phosphorylating complex alcohols comprises the following steps: (a) forming an intimate mixture of one or more complex alcohols and P O at a temperature below 80&deg; C. in the absence of additional solvents; and (b) allowing the intimate mixture to continue to react for a period of time at a temperature below 80&deg; C. until the formation of the dihydrogen form of the phosphorylated complex alcohol is substantially completed.

Decontaminated crushed polyethylene terephthalate is converted to decontaminated PBT withtout requiring a catalyst by mixing with 1,4-butanediol under reduced pressure, transeterifying at 120-190&deg; C., distilling off ethanediol and tetrahydrofuran under sub-atomspheric pressure. A selective adsorbent for the separation of organic material from solution comprises adsorbent particles and magnetic particles embedded in a porous matrix of organic polymeric material, the porosity of the matrix being selected so as to allow only molecules of up to a certain order of molecular weight to enter into the interstitial structure of the matrix whereby the composite material functions selectively to adsorb dissolved materials from solution. The adsorbent is useful, inter alia, in the food processing industry where trace quantities of materials need to be separated from complex mixtures.

Materials for the separation of organic substances from solution

Bitter substances (isohumulones) are removed from brewers yeast suspensions or brewers yeast autolysates by contacting a yeast suspension or yeast autolysate with a composite adsorbent material containing an adsorbent and magnetic particles embedded in a porous matrix of organic polymeric material having a pore size within the range of 2-30nm, and separating the composite containing isohumulone molecules adsorbed thereto from the suspension or autolysate. The composite may be regenerated by removing the adsorbed isohumulone which can then be recovered.
