An inhaler includes a main body having a canister housing, a medicament canister retained in a central outlet port of the canister housing, and a dose counter having an actuation member for operation by movement of the medicament canister. The canister housing has an inner wall, and a first inner wall canister support formation extending inwardly from a main surface of the inner wall. The canister housing has a longitudinal axis X which passes through the center of the central outlet port. The first inner wall canister support formation, the actuation member, and the central outlet port lie in a common plane coincident with the longitudinal axis X such that the first inner wall canister support formation protects against unwanted actuation of the dose counter by reducing rocking of the medicament canister relative to the main body of the inhaler.

The present invention provides an aerosol device for delivering a pharmaceutical formulation by inhalation via the mouth to the lungs or to the nostril in metered doses comprising: a pressurised aerosol canister including a vial containing a pharmaceutical formulation comprising an active ingredient, a propellant and, optionally, a co-solvent, the aerosol canister further comprising a metering valve having a valve stem; and an actuator for the aerosol canister, the actuator including a delivery outlet and a stem block, the stem block having a receptacle into which the valve stem of the metering valve of the aerosol canister is received and axially located and being displaceable relative to the vial of the aerosol canister to actuate the metering valve of the aerosol canister, a sump extending below the receptacle, the stem block further defining a discharge orifice arranged to direct the pharmaceutical formulation through the delivery outlet, a transfer tunnel having an input opening and an output opening through which a dispensed dose of the pharmaceutical formulation is able to pass from the sump to the discharge orifice, and a land length defining the distance from between the input opening and output opening, wherein the input opening and the output opening have cross-sectional areas of from 0.002 to 0.8 mmand the cross-sectional area of the input opening is smaller than the cross-sectional area of the output opening, and wherein the land length is from 0.5 mm to 10 mm.

Aerosol device

A dose counter for an inhaler includes a counter display arranged to indicate dosage information, and a drive system arranged to move the counter display incrementally in a first direction from a first station to a second station in response to actuation input. A regulator is provided which is arranged to act upon the counter display at the first station to regulate motion of the counter display at the first station to incremental movements.

A dose counter for counting doses of medicament dispensed by or remaining in a metered-dose inhaler. The dose counter includes a rotatably mounted first gear wheel having ratchet teeth and a display coupled to the first gear wheel, the display having a visible array of dose counting indicia indexable in response to rotary motion of the first gear wheel. The dose counter further includes an actuator mechanism having a first ratchet drive pawl for engaging the ratchet teeth of the first gear wheel in response to the dispensation of a medicament dose, and a second ratchet drive pawl for engaging the ratchet teeth of a gear wheel coupled to the display. In use, a first ratchet tooth of the first gear wheel is rotatably driven by the first pawl and then a second ratchet tooth of the gear wheel coupled to the display is rotatably driven by the second pawl.

A method of manufacturing a series of incremental dose counters for inhalers, which includes manufacturing the dose counters with nominal canister fire and dose count positions of a dose counter actuator relative to a dose counter chassis or inhaler main body, and which includes building the dose counters with an average dose count position in the series being, in canister fire process, at or after an average canister fire position in the series.

In use, the travel of the driver along the root circle of the gear wheel exceeds the corresponding linear movement of the actuator shaft.

A dose counter for a metered dose inhaler includes an incremental counting system for counting doses. The incremental counting system has a main body, an actuator arranged to be driven in response to canister motion and to drive an incremental output member in response to canister motion. The actuator and incremental output member are configured to have predetermined canister fire and count configurations in a canister fire sequence. The canister fire configuration is determined by a position of the actuator relative to a datum at which the canister fires medicament and the count configuration is determined by a position of the actuator relative to the datum at which the incremental count system makes an incremental count. The actuator is arranged to reach a position in the count configuration at or after a position in the canister fire configuration.

The lever is arranged to amplify a linear stroke at the input portion such that a linear stroke of the driver exceeds the linear input stroke. By amplifying the stroke, the risk of undercounting due to insufficient stroke length may be reduced.
