The present invention relates to novel ophthalmic lens elements and eyewear having wide field of view, low distortion, improved astigmatism correction where required and enhanced eye protection properties. Series of lens elements have steeply curved spherical reference surfaces. The edged lenses of the series have approximately consistent aperture size, shape and hollow depth across a range of common prescriptions. Novel sunglasses, laser protective eyewear, and lens edgings, coatings and frames are included in the invention.

Method of making wide field spherical lenses and protective eyewear

Optical lens element with a prescription zone, suitable for use in wraparound or protective type eyewear. The element may also include a peripheral vision zone, with no prismatic jump between the zones. Design methods for the prescription zone include temporally rotating a prescription section about a vertical axis through the optical center thereof, and/or decentring the optical axis of said prescription section relative to the geometric axis thereof, and providing partial surface correction for astigmatic and/or mean power errors. For prescription powers in the range &#x2212;6.0 to +6.0 diopters with 0 to 3 cyl, the optical lens element may be designed such that its front surface can be mounted in a frame of constant curvature of at least 5.0 diopters, with its back surface providing good clearance from temples and eyelashes. Applications include ophthalmic sunglass lenses.

An optical lens element of wrap-around or shield type wherein the aperture of the lens outline or edge of at least one surface of the optical lens element is of generally ovaline shape and located on the surface of a sphere whose radius of curvature corresponds to 11 D or above, a toroid where the horizontal radius or curvature corresponds to 11 D or above, or a surface where the radius of curvature changes across at least one section of the lens aperture.

A progressive ophthalmic lens element including a lens surface having an upper viewing zone having a surface to achieve a refracting power corresponding to distance vision, a lower viewing zone having a greater surface power than the upper viewing zone to achieve a refracting power corresponding to near vision, and an intermediate zon extending across the lens element having a surface power varying from that of the upper viewing zone to that of the lower viewing zone and including a corridor of relatively low surface astigmatism, the progressive ophthalmic lens element including progressive design elements selected to reduce myopia progression.

A progressive ophthalmic lens element having a front surface that includes an upper viewing zone having a surface power suitable for distance vision, a lower viewing zone having a surface power suitable for near vision, and a corridor of relatively low astigmatism connecting the upper and lower viewing zones, the corridor being a part of an intermediate viewing zone having a surface power varying from that of the upper viewing zone to that of the lower viewing zone. The progressive ophthalmic lens element also has a back surface. The invention is then characterized by the front surface including at least one correction to improve optical performance of the lens element by at least partially compensating for a cylinder correction applied to, or to be applied to, the backsurface.
