A vehicle transmission comprising a multi-ratio gearbox having a gearbox input shaft and a gearbox output shaft, the gearbox being operable to provide a driving connection between the gearbox input shaft and the gearbox output shaft at a selected one of a plurality of gear ratios, a torque converter having a torque converter input for connection to an engine, and a torque converter output driveably connected to the torque converter input by fluid coupling within the torque converter, a first driving connection between the torque converter output and the gearbox input shaft, a second driving connection between the torque converter input and the gearbox input shaft, and a selection means to select one of the first driving connection and the second driving connection.

Vehicle transmission

An axle assembly for a vehicle, the axle assembly comprising a differential gear having an input for connection to a drive shaft, and a first wheel hub to support a first wheel and a second wheel hub to support a second wheel, the first wheel hub and the second wheel hub being drivingly connected to the differential gear, wherein the first wheel hub is drivingly connected to the differential gear via a reverser mechanism, the reverser mechanism having a first operating mode where the first wheel hub is driven in the same direction as the second wheel hub and a second operating mode where the first wheel hub is driven in the opposite direction to the second wheel hub.

A vehicle of the type described wherein the torque converter has an input shaft adapted to be driven by the engine and connected to an impeller and an output shaft adapted to drive the ground engaging device and connected to a turbine, torque being transmitted between the impeller and the turbine hydro-kinetically by fluid and a reactor member in the fluid path and there being a lock up clutch which, when in an operative condition, connects the torque converter for direct drive without torque conversion between the input shaft and the output shaft and which, when in an inoperative condition, permits drive through the torque converter with torque conversion.
