Manufacturing optoelectronic modules includes supporting a printed circuit board substrate () on a first vacuum injection tool (). The printed circuit board substrate () has at least one optoelectronic component mounted thereon and has a solder mask () on a surface () facing away from the first vacuum injection tool (). The method includes causing the first vacuum injection tool () and a second vacuum injection tool () to be brought closer to one another such that a surface () of the second vacuum injection tool () is in contact with the solder mask (). Subsequently, a first epoxy () is provided, using a vacuum injection technique, in spaces () between the upper tool () and the solder mask ().

Vacuum injection molding for optoelectronic modules

Various optoelectronic modules are described and include one or more optoelectronic devices. Each optoelectronic module includes one or more optoelectronic devices. Sidewalls laterally surround each optoelectronic device and can be in direct contact with sides of the optoelectronic device or, in some cases, with an overmold surrounding the optoelectronic device. The sidewalls can be composed, for example, of a vacuum injected material that is non-transparent to light emitted by or detectable by the optoelectronic device. The module also includes a passive optical element. Depending on the implementation, the passive optical element can be on a cover for the module, directly on a top surface of the optoelectronic device, or on an overmold surrounding the optoelectronic device. Methods of fabricating such modules are described as well, and can facilitate manufacturing the modules using wafer-level processes.

Compact opto-electronic modules and fabrication methods for such modules

The present disclosure describes optical and optoelectronic assemblies that, in some cases, include screen-printed micro-spacers, as well as methods for manufacturing such assemblies and modules. For example, an optoelectronic device mounted on a substrate can include an optical sub-assembly including a first optical element and a first micro-spacer on the optical element. The optical sub-assembly can be disposed over the optoelectronic device, with a first air or vacuum gap separating the first optical element from the optoelectronic device, and the first micro-spacer laterally surrounding the first air or vacuum gap.

The wafer-level manufacturing method makes possible to manufacture ultrathin optical devices such as opto-electronic modules. A clear encapsulation is applied to an initial wafer including active optical components and a wafer-size substrate. Thereon, a photostructurable opaque coating is produced which includes apertures. Then, trenches are produced which extend through the clear encapsulation and establish side walls of intermediate products. Then, an opaque encapsulation is applied to the intermediate products, thus filling the trenches. Cutting through the opaque encapsulation material present in the trenches, singulated optical modules are produced, wherein side walls of the intermediate products are covered by the opaque encapsulation material. The wafer-size substrate can be attached to a rigid carrier wafer during most process steps.

The present disclosure describes light guides and a method of manufacturing light guides that include a rectangular prism-shaped bar, a first polymer or metal cladding on four sides of the rectangular prism-shaped bar, and a second polymer cladding disposed on the first polymer cladding on the four sides of the rectangular prism-shaped bar.

Light guides and manufacture of light guides

Molded circuit substrates include a conductive layer surrounded by an insulating sidewall. The insulating sidewall further provides a structural component for an electronic module into which the molded circuit substrate is incorporated. Accordingly, the molded circuit substrates can permit better performance, reduce electronic module thickness, and reduce fabrication costs. Methods for fabricating molded circuit substrates can facilitate precise positioning of insulating sidewalls, insulating partitions, electrical contacts and other components.

Optical device

The present disclosure describes optical and optoelectronic assemblies that, in some cases, include screen-printed micro-spacers, as well as methods for manufacturing such assemblies and modules. For example, micro-spacers can be applied on a first optical element layer, and a second optical element layer can be provided on the first micro-spacers. By providing the second optical element layer on the first micro-spacers, the second optical element layer and the first optical element layer can be separated from one another by air or vacuum gaps each of which is laterally surrounded by a portion of the first micro-spacers.

The present disclosure describes wafer-level processes for fabricating optoelectronic device subassemblies that can be mounted, for example, to a circuit substrate, such as a flexible cable or printed circuit board, and integrated into optoelectronic modules that include one or more optical subassemblies stacked over the optoelectronic device subassembly. The optoelectronic device subassembly can be mounted onto the circuit substrate using solder reflow technology even if the optical subassemblies are composed of materials that are not reflow compatible.

The waveguide structure can be manufactured on wafer-scale and comprises a holding structure and a first and a second waveguides each having a core and two end faces. The holding structure comprises a separation structure being arranged between the first and the second waveguide and provides an optical separation between the first and the second waveguide in a region between the end faces of the first and second waveguides. A method for manufacturing such a waveguide structure with at least one waveguide comprises shaping replication material by means of tool structures to obtain the end faces, hardening the replication material and removing the tool structures from a waveguide structures wafer comprising a plurality of so-obtained waveguides.

This disclosure describes optoelectronic modules that include an image sensor having at least two regions separated optically from one another by a wall. The wall can include a bridge portion that extends over the image sensor and further can include a cured adhesive portion, part of which is disposed between a lower surface of the bridge portion and an upper surface of the image sensor. Various techniques are described for fabricating the modules so as to help prevent the adhesive from contaminating sensitive regions of the image sensor. The wall can be substantially light-tight so as to prevent undesired optical cross-talk, for example, between a light emitter located to one side of the wall and a light sensitive region of the image sensor located to the other side of the wall.
