Partial optimization systems and methods of wavelengths or spectrum in an optical network include, based on current services in the optical network each having a route and wavelength assignment and based on a ratio of services that can be changed in the partial optimization, preforming a first stage optimization to determine which of the current services are changed for one or more of the route and the wavelength assignment to attain a reduction of a number of wavelengths; performing a second stage optimization to determine an order of implementing changes from the first stage optimization that with the order minimizing one or more of conflicts and step counts; and causing implementation of the changes in the optical network.

Optimal partial reconfiguration of spectrum in optical networks

Computer-implemented systems and methods for visually presenting spectrum usage of optical spectrum in an optical network include obtaining spectrum data which defines spectrum usage of optical spectrum associated with the optical network including a plurality of nodes interconnected by a plurality of links; and displaying a circular histogram to visually illustrate the spectrum usage based on the spectrum data, wherein each segment of the circular histogram represents an associated portion of the optical spectrum and a visual indicator in each segment represents usage of the associated portion.

Optical network visualization and planning

Computer-implemented systems and methods for visually presenting spectrum usage of optical spectrum in an optical network include displaying a network map of the optical network comprising a plurality of nodes and a plurality of links connecting the plurality of nodes to one another; responsive to obtaining spectrum data comprising channel assignments on the plurality of links and nodes as endpoints of the associated channel assignments, displaying a plurality of circular histograms to visually illustrate spectrum usage in the optical network; and adjusting the plurality of circular histograms based on selections of a plurality of endpoints in the optical network. The plurality of circular histograms visually represent the spectrum usage by representing the optical spectrum in the optical network around the associated circular histogram, and wherein each portion or segment of the plurality of circular histograms represents one of a wavelength and a portion of spectrum.

The invention makes use of the Short Message Service (SMS) or Unstructured Supplementary Services Data (USSD) capabilities present in today's cellular networks as a means of providing call control and presence signalling and, in particular, for providing the means of effecting hand-off at least from/to the cellular domain to/from the WiFi domain. SMS and USSD were originally designed as engineering channels, but SMS has become highly popular as a service in its own right. SMS and USSD are built into all existing cellular (GSM, CDMA etc.) network and predate the current GPRS overlay. In particular, SMS and USSD can be used while a call may be active in the cellular domain, and a handset may send and receive such messages, with an additional facility which may be used by the invention of receiving acknowledgements of successful receipt of an outgoing SMS by the messaged party&#x2014;effectively a confirmation from the network. The present invention proposes to use SMS or USSD as a means of an adjunct call control and presence signalling in the cellular domain between a handset and the SIP domain.

Circuit bearer control

The invention relates to enabling differential forwarding in address-based carrier networks such as Ethernet networks. There is described a method of and connection controller for establishing connections () in a frame-based communications network comprising nodes (-and) such as Ethernet switches. The connections are established by configuring, in various of the nodes, mappings for forwarding data frames, such as Ethernet frames. The mappings are from a combination of a) a destination (or source) address corresponding to a destination (or source) node () of the connection and b) an identifier, such as a VLAN tag. The mappings are to selected output ports of the various nodes. By using the combination of destination (or source) address AND identifier, the mappings enable data frames belonging to different connections () to be forwarded differentially (ie forwarded on different output ports) at a node () despite the different connections having the same destination node. This enables flexibility in routing connections and the ability to perform traffic engineering.

Differential forwarding in address-based carrier networks

An Ethernet network comprises nodes which support a plurality of different forwarding modes. A range of VLAN Identifiers (VIDs) are allocated to each of the forwarding modes. Connections are configured between a source node and a destination node of the network using different forwarding modes. Packets carrying data traffic are sent to the destination node by selectively setting a VID in a packet to a first value, to transfer a packet via a first connection and a first forwarding mode, and a second value to transfer a packet via the second connection and the second forwarding mode. Packets received from both of the connections and sent on to an end user. VLAN Identifiers can be allocated to different releases of functionality at nodes (e.g. software releases) such that packets are forwarded via a set of nodes supporting a first release, or via a set of nodes supporting a second release.

Evolution of ethernet networks

A telecommunications system comprises an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network having uncommitted bandwidth, and a plurality of adaptive grooming routers (AGR) coupled to the network. The AGRs comprise a group adapted to function as a virtual transit exchange whose fabric and control are distributed over the group. The visual comprising the AGRs incorporates independent connection control and call routing functions and has means for determining the current system status whereby to set up narrow band connections across the ATM network based on that status determination.

ATM telecommunications systems and method for routing narrow band traffic

Traffic from a number of different service type users is multiplexed into minicells for transmission over an ATM link. Service type information is transmitted in a service specific field and is stored. This stored information is used to derive length information to delineate the different length user minicells. The technique occupies less bandwidth than the conventional methods for transmitting cell length information.

A method and apparatus are provided to achieve frequency synchronization between a first clock at a first node and a second clock at a second node of a packet-carrying communications network. At the first node: a property of packet transmission through the network between the first node and the second node is measured; and the measurement of the property is sent to the second node. At the second node, the same property of packet transmission through the network between the first node and the second node is measured. The measurement of the property made at the first node and the measurement of the property made at the second node are used to synchronize the frequency of the second clock with respect to the first clock.

Synchronization of network nodes

An intravascular platform for supporting an intravascular device includes two loops of wire each configured to assume a shape lying generally on a virtual cylinder of given diameter. The two loops are interconnected by at least one connecting wire which maintains the loops axially spaced from each other. Also disclosed are axially-extended loop forms, and associated intravascular devices.
