Fibre forming process

A dosimeter for radiation fields is described. The dosimeter includes a scintillator a light pipe having a first end in optical communication with the scintillator and a light detector. The light pipe may have a hollow core with a light reflective material about the periphery of the hollow core. The dosimeter may further include a light source that generates light for use as a calibrating signal for a measurement signal and/or for use to check the light pipe.

Fibre optic dosimeter

The present disclosure provides in a first aspect a mode-locked laser for generating laser pulses. The mode-locked laser comprises an optical coupler and a first optical path capable of carrying optical signals from and to the optical coupler. The first optical path includes an optical amplifier that is arranged so that saturation of optical amplification causes amplitude modulation of the light. The optical amplifier has a saturation time that is shorter than a pulse transition period of the mode-locked laser and is arranged for recovery of amplifying properties after the saturation within a period of time that is shorter than the pulse transition period of the mode-locked laser. The laser further comprises a second optical path capable of carrying optical signals from and to the optical coupler. The second optical path includes an optical isolator. The first optical path has a non-linear property and is arranged so that, when a light pulse that is received from the second optical path is split by the optical coupler into component light pulses that are directed in opposite directions in the first optical path, the component light pulses experience differing shifts in phase and wherein the mode-locked laser is arranged so that mode-locked lasing is initiated by a light pulse that is amplitude modulated by the optical amplifier.

Mode-locked laser

A dosimeter () for radiation fields is described. The dosimeter includes a scintillator () a light pipe () having a first end in optical communication with the scintillator () and a light detector (). The light pipe () may have a hollow core () with a light reflective material about the periphery of the hollow core (). The dosimeter () may further include a light source () that generates light for use as a calibrating signal for a measurement signal and/or for use to check the light pipe ().

An optical waveguide in the form of an optical fibre () having at least one longitudinally extending light guiding core region () composed at least in part of a polymeric material, a longitudinally extending core-surrounding region () composed of a polymeric material, and a plurality of light confining elements (), such as, for example, channel-like holes, located within the core surrounding region. The light confining elements extend in the longitudinal direction of the core region and are distributed about the core region, and at least a majority of the light confining elements having a refractive index less than that of the polymeric material from which the core-surrounding region is composed. A preform for use in manufacture of the optical waveguide is also disclosed.

Polymer optical waveguide

An optical amplifier waveguide provides variable amplification gain to a broad wavelength input signal. The degree of amplification is proportional to the length of the transmission of the input signal along the amplification waveguide. The amplification waveguide means further comprises a series of output wavelength couplers, which are preferably fiber gratings, placed along the length of the amplification waveguide for coupling a predetermined amplified signal from the amplification waveguide to the output fiber. Additionally, the optical amplifier waveguide of the present invention may include a plurality of noise wavelength coupling means, which are preferably fiber gratings, for coupling unwanted noise from the amplification waveguide means to a noise dissipation means.
