Described herein is a closed-loop electronic control system for controlling combustion in a diesel engine operating with highly premixed combustion, in which an injection system is designed to obtain at least two injections of fuel per engine cycle, the injections comprising at least one pilot injection and a subsequent main injection. The system is provided with sensors designed for measuring or calculating quantities characteristic of the process of fuel combustion, and a closed-loop control block, which provides a control of the modality of fuel injection based upon the measured or calculated value of the quantities by regulating at least one of the following parameters: the distance in time elapsing between the execution of the pilot injection and the main injection; and the amount of fuel injected by means of the pilot injection.

A fuel-injection system ('&#x2033;) for an internal-combustion engine (), of the type provided with: a tank () for collection of the fuel; compressor system () for drawing in the fuel from the tank () and making it available at high pressure to an storage volume (); at least one injector (&#x2032;&#x2033;) hydraulically connected to the storage volume () for taking in the fuel at a high pressure from the storage volume () and injecting it into a respective combustion chamber () of the engine (); a fluid line () connecting the storage volume to the tank; and pressure-regulator means () in the storage volume () set along the fluid line (); the pressure-regulator systems () are set hydraulically downstream of the storage volume () so as to enable a continuous flow of fuel through the storage volume () itself.

Injection system for an internal-combustion engine

The system has a high-pressure pump having a number of mechanical pumping elements for pumping high-pressure fuel to a common rail; and a number of injectors communicating with the rail and activated to inject a quantity of fuel sequentially into the corresponding cylinders of the engine. Each pumping element has a delivery at least equal to the maximum draw of each injector, and is activated in phase with at least one of the injectors to minimize the variations in fuel pressure in the rail. Each pumping element may be activated by a cam, which may even have a segmented profile to effect a portion of the travel of the respective pumping element in phase with a corresponding injector.
