A selective call receiver (100) comprises a receiver (104) for receiving a message and a controller (112) having the capability of determining the length of a received message. At least one of at least two displays (110, 120) is selected to display the received message according the received message length.

A selective call receiver (10) for receiving and presenting messages comprises a receiver (12) for receiving the messages and a memory (14) for storing the received messages. A processor (13) calculates the length of certain types of stored messages, and, for those types of messages, the length of the message is displayed prior to presenting the message.

A non-contact pager programming system includes a controller (30) which is responsive to command and data signals to generate first signals (34) including command and data words to govern a transmitting circuit (36) to transmit over the air a programming signal (46) digitally modulated in accordance with a reception protocol. The programming system may also include a receiving circuit (42) which is governed by at least one second signal (40) generated by the controller to receive over-the-air signals (52) generated by the pager being programmed in response to the programming signal.

A leadless electrical resistor (40), comprising a parallelepiped dielectric body (42), or chip, having a resistive film element (44) on one face. A pair of conductive terminations (46) are connected to opposite ends of the resistive element in order to form a chip resistor. A second resistive film element (54) is formed on the opposing face of the dielectric body in a direction perpendicular to the first resistor. A second pair of conductive terminations (56) are connected to opposite ends of the second resistive element (54) in order to form a second resistor on the back side of the chip. The terminations of the second resistor are on adjacent sides of the chip body compared to the terminations of the first resistor, thus forming a chip resistor (40) having two resistive elements (44 and 54) with terminations (46 and 56) on the four vertical walls of the chip.

Leadless resistor

A driving circuit including a single transformer drives a piezoelectric transducer and an electroluminescent lamp. The circuit is coupled to the driving circuit for limiting the peak current through the transformer.
