An &#x3b1;-AlOcoated cutting tool insert combining a cemented carbide with a binder phase enriched surface zone and a textured &#x3b1;-AlO-layer is disclosed. The &#x3b1;-AlOlayer has a thickness ranging from about 2-9 &#x3bc;m and is composed of columnar grains having a length/width ratio from about 2-12. It is characterized by a strong (104) growth texture and by low intensity of the (012), (110) and (113) diffraction peaks. The textured &#x3b1;-AlOis preferably deposited on an MTCVD Ti(C,N) layer having a thickness from about 2-10 &#x3bc;m. When the alumina layer is the uppermost layer, it may be wet-blasted to an Rvalue of &#x3c;about 1 &#x3bc;m, giving the tool a black and shiny appearance.

Alumina coated grade

The present invention concerns a cutting tool insert for turning of steel at high cutting speeds. The cutting tool insert comprises a (006) textured &#x3b1;-AlOcoated cemented carbide grade. The cemented carbide body has about 4.5-6.5 wt-% Co and about 3-10 wt-% cubic carbide forming metals and an S-value of about 0.77-0.92 and a coercivity of about 10-20 kA/m. The &#x3b1;-AlOlayer has a thickness ranging from about 7 to 12 &#x3bc;m and is composed of columnar grains having a length/width ratio from about 2 to 12 and is deposited on an MTCVD Ti(C,N) layer having a thickness from about 4 to 12 &#x3bc;m. The alumina layer is characterized by a pronounced (006) growth texture. The alumina layer is the uppermost layer and is wet-blasted having an Rvalue of less than 1 &#x3bc;m, giving the tool a black and shiny appearance.

Coated cutting tool

A coated cutting insert for metal machining, in particular of short chipping materials, includes a tungsten carbide-based substrate with a binder phase enriched surface zone having at least one rake face and at least one clearance face intersecting to form a cutting edge. The binder phase enriched surface zone is at least partly missing on the rake face including at least a part of the surface extending from the cutting edge. As a result, an optimum combination of edge strength and wear resistance has been achieved.

Insert for metal cutting

A cutting tool insert with a cemented carbide and a coating. The cemented carbide substrate includes WC, 7 to 12 wt-% Co, 5 to 11 wt-% cubic carbides of metals from the groups IVb, Vb and VIb with a binder phase that is highly alloyed with cobalt. The tungsten carbide phase has a mean intercept length of 0.7 to 1.4 &#x3bc;m. The coating includes at least one 2 to 12 &#x3bc;m thick &#x3b1;-AlOlayer composed of columnar grains with texture coefficients: TC(012)&#x3e;2.2 and TC(024)&#x3e;0.6&#xd7;TC(012).
