PCIe devices installed in host computers communicating with service nodes can provide virtualized NVMe over fabric services. A workload on the host computer can submit an SQE on a NVMe SQ. The PCI device can read the SQE to obtain a command identifier, an OpCode, and a namespace identifier (NSID). The SQE can be used to produce a LTP packet that includes the opcode, the NSID, and a request identifier. The LTP packet can be sent to the service node, which may access a SAN in accordance with the opcode and NSID, and can respond to the LTP with a second LTP that includes the request identifier and a status indicator. The PCI device can use the status indicator and the request identifier to produce a CQE that is placed on a NVMe CQ associated with the SQ.

Methods and systems for providing a virtualized NVMe over fabric service

PCIe devices installed in host computers communicating with service nodes can provide virtualized and high availability PCIe functions to host computer workloads. The PCIe device can receive a PCIe TLP encapsulated in a PCIe DLLP via a PCIe bus. The TLP includes a TLP address value, a TLP requester identifier, and a TLP type. The PCIe device can terminate the PCIe transaction by sending a DLLP ACK message to the host computer in response to receiving the TLP. The TLP packet can be used to create a workload request capsule that includes a request type indicator, an address offset, and a workload request identifier. A workload request packet that includes the workload request capsule can be sent to a virtualized service endpoint. The service node, implementing the virtualized service endpoint, receives a workload response packet that includes the workload request identifier and a workload response payload.

Methods and systems for loosely coupled PCIe service proxy over an IP network

A distributed Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) Forwarder (FCF) and a distributed Fiber Channel Switch are described. The Distributed FCF is realized by instantiating respective connections between at least one Controlling FCF and a plurality of FCoE Data-Plane Forwarder (FDF) devices and between individual FDF devices. The Distributed FC Switch is realized by instantiating respective connections between at least one Controlling Switch and a plurality of FC Data-Plane Forwarder (FCDF) devices and between individual FCDF devices.

Distributed fibre channel forwarder

In one embodiment, a Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) proxy point (FPP) that is connected to one or more end-point devices is coupled to one or more other FPPs, and to a FCoE control and management plane (F-CMP) server. The FPP provides data plane functionality. The F-CMP server provides control plane functionality. At least some control and management traffic received at the FPP is proxied between the F-CMP server and the one or more end point devices connected to the FPP. FCoE traffic received at the FPP from the one or more end point devices connected to the FPP is transmitted to the one or more other FPPs without the FCoE traffic traversing the F-CMP server. The transmitting is performed by data plane functionality of the FPP operating under directions from the control plane functionality of the F-CMP server.

End-to end fibre channel over ethernet

The present invention provides methods and devices for implementing a Low Latency Ethernet ('LLE') solution, also referred to herein as a Data Center Ethernet ('DCE') solution, which simplifies the connectivity of data centers and provides a high bandwidth, low latency network for carrying Ethernet and storage traffic. Some aspects of the invention involve transforming FC frames into a format suitable for transport on an Ethernet. Some preferred implementations of the invention implement multiple virtual lanes (&#x201c;VLs&#x201d;) in a single physical connection of a data center or similar network. Some VLs are &#x201c;drop&#x201d; VLs, with Ethernet-like behavior, and others are &#x201c;no-drop&#x201d; lanes with FC-like behavior. Some preferred implementations of the invention provide guaranteed bandwidth based on credits and VL. Active buffer management allows for both high reliability and low latency while using small frame buffers. Preferably, the rules for active buffer management are different for drop and no drop VLs.

This document discusses, among other things, applying network policy at a network device. In an example embodiment fiber channel hard zoning information may be received that indicates whether a fiber channel frame is permitted to be communicated between two fiber channel ports. Some example embodiments include identifying a media access control addresses associated with the fiber channel ports. An example embodiment may include generating one or more access control entries based on the fiber channel identifications of the fiber channel ports and the zoning information. The access control entries may be distributes to an Ethernet port to be inserted into an existing access control list and used to enforce a zoning policy upon fiber channel over Ethernet frames.

Apparatus and method for applying network policy at a network device

A technique is provided for implementing online mirroring of a volume in a storage area network. A first instance of the volume is instantiated at a first port of the fiber channel fabric for enabling I/O operations to be performed at the volume. One or more mirroring procedures may be performed at the volume. In at least one implementation, the first port is able to perform first I/O operations at the volume concurrently while the mirroring procedures are being performed at the first volume. In one implementation, the mirroring procedures may be implemented at a fabric switch of the storage area network. Additionally, in at least one implementation, multiple hosts may be provided with concurrent access to the volume during the mirroring operations without serializing the access to the volume.

Mirroring mechanisms for storage area networks and network based virtualization

A distributed Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) Forwarder (FCF) and a distributed Fiber Channel Switch are described. The Distributed FCF is realized by instantiating respective connections between at least one Controlling FCF and a plurality of FCoE Data-Plane Forwarder (FDF) devices and between individual FDF devices. The Distributed FC Switch is realized by instantiating respective connections between at least one Controlling Switch and a plurality of FC Data-Plane Forwarder (FCDF) devices and between individual FCDF devices. The components of the distributed FCF or Switch are collectively represented by a single Domain identifier (Domain_ID), and thus the distributed FCF or Switch appears to outside entities as a non-distributed FCF or Switch.

Methods and apparatus for implementing storage virtualization on a network device of a storage area network are disclosed. A frame or packet is received at a port of the network device. It is then determined that the frame or packet pertains to access of a virtual storage location of a virtual storage unit representing one or more physical storage locations on one or more physical storage units of the storage area network. A virtual-physical mapping between the one or more physical storage locations and the virtual storage location is then obtained. A new or modified frame or packet is then sent to an initiator or a target specified by the virtual-physical mapping.

Methods and apparatus for implementing virtualization of storage within a storage area network

A Fiber Channel Switch which enables end devices in different Fabrics to communicate with one another while retaining their unique Fiber Channel Domain_IDs. The Switch is coupled to a first fabric having a first set of end devices and a second fabric having a second set of end devices. The Switch is configured to enable communication by the first set of end devices associated with the first fabric with the second set of end devices associated with the second set of end devices using the unique Domain_IDs of each of the first set and the second set of end devices. In one embodiment of the invention, the first and second fabrics are first and second Virtual Storage Array Networks (VSANs) respectively. In an alternative embodiment, the first fabric and the second fabric are separate physical fabrics.

Ethernet extension for the data center

Increased usage of network links is provided and smaller forwarding tables are required. A combination of STP and Multipath methods may be implemented in a network. Frames may be forwarded between switches not only according to MAC addresses, but also according to switch IDs and local IDs. Switch IDs do not need to be globally unique, but should be unique within a particular network. Local IDs need only be unique within a particular switch. Some preferred implementations allow frames to be delivered in order to devices requiring in-order delivery. Preferably, core switches need only learn the switch IDs of each core switch and each edge switch, and the appropriate exit port(s) corresponding to each switch. Preferably, the forwarding tables of each edge switch indicate the addresses of each device attached to that edge switch, the address of each device that is in communication with an attached device and the address of every other switch in the network.

Forwarding table reduction and multipath network forwarding

In one embodiment, one or more Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) proxy points (FPPs) communicates control and management information with a separately housed FCoE control and management plane (F-CMP) server in order to direct data plane functionality of the FPPs. Each FPP also proxies control and management protocols between the F-CMP server and one or more FCoE end-point devices for which the FPP is responsible (on FCoE ports). Traffic received by the FPP may then be processed according to the directed data plane functionality, such that FCoE traffic transmitted between first and second FCoE end-point devices separated by the Ethernet network is directed over the Ethernet network end-to-end between correspondingly responsible FPPs without traversing the F-CMP server.
