Improved coating blades are disclosed, as well as processes for manufacturing such blades. The inventive blades have an intermediate edge deposit effective to reduce heat transfer from a wear resistant top deposit to the blade substrate. In one embodiment, the intermediate layer is comprised of NiCr, possibly with embedded oxide particles. Suitably, the intermediate layer and the top deposit are applied by an HVOF process. It is also envisaged that the intermediate layer may be deposited by plasma spraying. The intermediate layer may comprise stabilized zirconia.

Coating blade

There is disclosed a method for the manufacture of coating or doctoring blades, wherein an elastomeric wear-resistant material at the blade tip is provided in a continuous process. During the manufacturing, the thickness of the applied elastomeric material is determined by winding the blade (containing the applied polymer composition) into a coil before the applied composition is fully cured. Successive turns of the coil are separated by a distance which is smaller than the initial thickness of the applied composition, such that the only partly cured composition is deformed by adjacent turns of the coil into the desired thickness and/or shape.

Method of manufacturing a coating or doctoring blade

A material for dewatering elements at the wet end of a paper-making machine is disclosed. The material comprises an elastomeric polymer matrix, and a filler added to the matrix at a level of 10 to 50 percent by weight, and the material has a hardness according to Shore A between 60 and 85. The invention also relates to a dewatering element comprising such material, and to the use of such material for the preparation of a dewatering element.

Materials for dewatering elements

A blade for creping has been described. The blade according to the invention has a ceramic top layer covering the working edge of the blade, as well as the surface upon which the web impacts during creping. The ceramic top layer is a ceramic composition having a content of chromia. Preferably, the ceramic composition of the top layer comprises chromia-titania, with a titania content of up to 25% by weight, and preferably between 10% and 15% titania.

A process for the manufacture of a coating or doctoring blade comprising a band of steel or other form-stable material and a wear-resistant polymer coating applied on said band along a longitudinal edge section thereof subjected to wear, said process comprising the following steps: (a) providing continuous relative movement between said band and an application and treatment station; (b) continuously applying at said station a fast-curing polymer composition along said edge section; (c) allowing the applied composition to spread out so as to reach the very extreme of said edge section and then to cure to form an elastic and tacky-free coating; and, optionally (d) post-curing the coating at an increased temperature; as an alternative to such process there can be used a blade of double width compared to said first band and continuously supplying a fast-curing composition along a longitudinal central section of double width compared to said edge section and longitudinally cutting said second band along the middle of the coated central section thereof to form two tip-coated blades; and a coating or doctoring blade prepared by such process.

Process for the manufacture of soft tipped blades

A self-adjusting blade for engagement with a moving work surface, comprising a steel strip elongated in a first direction between first and second sides, said strip having an edge section along said first side for contact with said work surface, and said edge section being hardened to a hardness exceeding that of the remaining part of said strip. The self-adjusting blade is provided with a coating of a low wear resistance material covering substantially all of said edge section at least on the part thereof contacting the work surface.

Self-adjusting blade

A doctor blade for direct contact with a ceramic roll surface. The doctor blade includes a strip of metallic carrier material, which, along one edge section is provided with a ceramic coating. The ceramic coating on the blade has a hardness ranging from approximately 850 to 950 microvickers, thereby substantially increasing wear resistance of the blade without substantially increasing wear on the ceramic roll surface for which the blade is adapted for use.

Doctor blade

Creping blade for the detachment of a travelling paper web from a dryer cylinder, said blade having an edge or tip section engaging said cylinder and being constantly hit by the traveling web during its detachment from the cylinder. The invention resides in the improvement of said edge or tip section being provided with a wear-resistant coating on a first part of said edge section hit by the web, the other part of said edge section engaging the cylinder being uncoated or coated with a non-wear-resistant material so that said other part is subjected to sliding wear. A recess is located in the side surface so that the wear land surface that contacts the cylinder remains essentially constant throughout the operative cycle of the blade.

A coating blade (5) for controlled application and smoothing of a coating composition on a travelling paper web (7) supported by a co-rotary roll (9), said blade (5) comprising a steel strip (13) elongated in a first direction between first and second edge sections, said first edge section engaging the paper web (7) and being provided with an abrasive wear resistant deposit (15) to extend the life of the blade, wherein an intermediate layer (17) positioned between said deposit (15) and said steel strip (13), said layer (17) having a higher resistance to abrasive wear than said deposit (15).
