A method of charging a vertical tube having an internal diameter of 50 mm or less with catalyst particles, which comprises introducing a filling aid into the vertical tube, where the filling aid comprises a flexible elongated body and the ratio of the cross section of the flexible elongated body to the cross section of the tube is from 0.003 to 0.08, and introducing the catalyst particles into the tube.

In a process for the thermal treatment of the precursor material of a catalytically active material in a rotary tube furnace through which a gas stream flows, at least a proportion of the gas stream flowing through the rotary tube furnace is circulated, and the associated rotary tube furnace apparatus and tube-bundle reactors for the partial gas-phase oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid are loaded with catalysts whose catalytically active material is obtainable by the process for the thermal treatment.

A process prepares methacrolein from isobutane by subjecting isobutane to a partial catalytic dehydrogenation in the gas phase and using the isobutenic product gas mixture to charge an oxidation zone in which the isobutene is oxidized to methacrolein in the gas phase with heterogeneous catalysis using molecular oxygen accompanied by molecular nitrogen as the oxygen source.

A process prepares methacrylic acid from isobutane by subjecting isobutane to a partial catalytic dehydrogenation in the gas phase and charging an oxidation zone with the isobutenic product gas mixture after the components other than isobutane and isobutene have been substantially removed from the product gas mixture. The oxygen required to charge the oxidation zone is introduced accompanied by nitrogen.
