A membrane bioreactor (MBR) has membranes comprising a supporting structure. A supply unit doses a sorbent such as powdered activated carbon (PAC) into the MBR. The PAC is maintained at a concentration in the mixed liquor of 200 mg/L or more. Mixed liquor with the sorbent particles recirculates within the MBR at a flow rate of at least twice the feed flow rate. Air bubbles are provided to scour the membranes including during at least part of a permeation step. The sorbent particles are present in the mixed liquor and contact the membranes. Bioaugmentation products may be immobilized on PAC or other carriers and then added to an MBR or other bioreactors.

Use of activated carbon in a membrane bioreactor

Recalcitrant chemical oxygen demand (COD) of a liquid is reduced in a water treatment system. The method includes pretreating the liquid in a pretreatment unit to remove indigenous bacteria or microbes to a population level below which the indigenous organisms can interfere with the screened and externally introduced microorganisms. The liquid is then provided to a reactor that has a filter bed formed with a carrier material. Special microbes are screened and used to colonize the carrier material to remove recalcitrant COD. A biofilm is cultured on the surface of the carrier material to immobilize the screened microbes in the reactor. The method further includes percolating the liquid from the pretreatment unit through the filter bed colonized with the screened microbes to degrade at least part of the recalcitrant COD under aerobic conditions. In one embodiment, the filter is formed with biological granular activated carbon (GAC) as the carrier material and the screened microbes comprise at least one microbial species selected from the group consisting ofand Yeast.

Method of removing recalcitrant organic pollutants

A method for reducing recalcitrant chemical oxygen demand (COD) of a liquid in a water system is provided. Method of reducing residual recalcitrant organic pollutants

A membrane filtration process includes pretreating an influent solution to remove suspended solids, to produce a pretreated solution. pH of the pretreated solution is adjusted to at least 8.3 or lower by injecting COinto the pretreated solution, to produce a conditioned solution. Injecting COalso serves to supplement bicarbonate in the conditioned solution. The conditioned solution is flowed through a membrane filtration unit, to produce a permeate solution and a retentate solution. The membrane filtration unit comprises reverse osmosis membranes or nanofiltration membranes, or both. The retentate solution is then treated to cause precipitation, to produce a supernatant solution and a reject solution. At least a portion of the supernatant solution is recirculated by combining it with the influent solution prior to the step of pretreating.

Membrane filtration process with high water recovery

Disclosed is a method of conditioning mixed liquor in membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems comprising adding an effective amount of a treatment composition comprising a water soluble cationic quaternary ammonium starch or a water soluble quaternary ammonium starch/gum blend to the mixed liquor. Also disclosed is a method of improving flux in an MBR system comprising adding the treatment composition to the mixed liquor of the MBR.

The present invention concerns a method of detecting cationic polymers comprising: obtaining a target water sample containing a cationic polymer; adding a polymer dispersant solution and a phosphate solution to the target water sample, the polymer dispersant solution is comprised of a polymer dispersant with calcium and magnesium hardness and the phosphate solution is comprised of a phosphate; standing the target water sample; and measuring the turbidity of the target water sample; comparing the turbidity of said target water sample with a calibration curve of the turbidity of samples containing known concentrations of cationic polymers to determine the concentration of cationic polymers in said target water sample.

In one embodiment, the tannin containing polymer is a water soluble or dispersible copolymer of a tannin and a cationic monomer. In another embodiment, the tannin containing polymer is a water soluble or dispersible polymer of a tannin, a cationic monomer, and at least one monomer.
