An assembly and method for securing head suspension members on shelf segments of metallic or ceramic actuator arms in a disk drive. The assembly comprises an actuator arm with a reduced thickness shelf segment, at least one head suspension member, a staking member having particular attributes and a staking plate also having particular attributes. The assembly is designed such that forcible expansion of the staking member takes place exclusively within the material of the staking plate member. The method is formulated such that the constituent elements of the assembly are aligned, placed under compression and staked together wherein an interference fit is formed between the staking member and staking plate member and no forcible pressure from the staking procedure is transmitted to the actuator arm. The assembly and method are ideally utilized in a multi-disk disk drive in which a plurality of head suspensions are secured to multiple arms of a single actuator in a single procedure.

Assembly and method for securing head suspensions on actuator arms

An arm for mounting a head in a disk drive, the arm comprising an end region adapted to carry the head on a mounting surface and a pair of side regions angularly disposed with respect to the mounting surface to straddle the head. That is, the side regions and mounting surface form a channel within which the head is disposed. Thus, the profile (i.e., height) of the arm is reduced. This allows disks in a multiple disk drive to be spaced by a reduced amount.

An assembly for mounting a head in a disk drive (such as a disk reader or servowriter), comprising a detachable load beam slider arm adapted to carry the head on a distal end thereof, and an actuator arm including a resilient clamp for releasably attaching the proximal end of the load beam slider arm to the actuator arm. Thus, the head may easily be removed and/or replaced simply by removing the head and load beam slider arm as a unit from the actuator arm and replacing it with another head-load beam slider arm unit.

An assembly and method for mounting a head in a disk drive (such as a disk reader or servowriter), comprising a detachable load beam slider arm adapted to carry the head on a distal end thereof, an actuator arm, and a threaded clamp for releasably attaching the proximal end of the load beam slider arm to the actuator arm, the threaded clamp being adapted to remain attached to the actuator arm when the load beam slider arm is removed. Alternatively, the slamp is adapted to remain attached to the load beam slider arm when the load beam slider arm is removed. Thus, the head may easily be removed and/or replaced simply by removing the head and load beam slider arm as a unit from the actuator arm and replacing it with another head-load beam slider arm unit.

A hub and spindle assembly for an interchangeable, removable disk of a disk drive. The spindle assembly includes means for driving the hub assembly, matingly attached and removably engaged thereto, so as to rotate the disk coupled to the hub. The hub assembly includes surfaces for engaging an accurately machined rotational surface of the spindle assembly and force engaging means for ensuring mating contact of the hub assembly surfaces with the spindle assembly and for ensuring removeable engagement. The hub and spindle assembly minimize runout such that the Read/Write heads track an essentially circular disk track, even if the disk is removed, reinserted or placed on a different spindle of the same type.

A rigid magnetic disc memory apparatus having an aperture formed in the base such that contaminants from the bearings are removed before they can migrate into the vicinity of the discs. In a preferred embodiment the aperture is located in the region of high pressure created by a rotor and stator assembly. The pressure differential causes air and contaminants to flow out of the disc drive enclosure. The pressure differential across the aperture is increased by connecting a duct between the aperture and the inlet side of the clean air supply blower.

An apparatus for mounting of magnetic head arms on a head carriage in a disc drive memory system. The magnetic head arms are held firmly in place by clamping slug and bolt assemblies which are mounted through the head arm channel walls. The apparatus includes elements mounted in the head arm channel of the carriage for aligning and supporting the magnetic head arms in the channel.

A magnetic read/write head is accurately positioned parallel and adjacent to the plane of a rigid magnetic disc with high track density by a stepper motor in an open-loop fashion without servomechanism control.
