A method of making and using a printer comprising a duplexing unit that pivots along a horizontal plane for media path access. The duplexing unit does not contain any motor driven rollers for moving a media sheet therethrough. The duplexing unit's vertical axis hinge allows the duplexing unit to swing open and closed horizontally.

A printing apparatus includes a media input tray including a surface for holding media; and a media output tray including a first edge and a second edge opposite the first edge, the media output tray includes a first position such that the first edge is located at a first distance hfrom the surface of the media input tray and the second edge is located at a second distance hfrom the surface of the media input tray; and a second position such that the first edge is at a third distance hfrom the surface of the media input tray and the second edge is located at a fourth distance hfrom the surface of the media input tray, wherein h&#x3e;h, h&#x3e;h, and h&#x3e;h.

Printer media output and input tray configuration

A pivotable duplexing unit is attached to the wall of a printer using a hinge having an axis that is substantially perpendicular to the base. A latch and catch holds the pivotable duplexing unit in a closed position relative to the wall of the printing apparatus. The wall includes a support member for the hinge, and the pivotable duplexing unit further includes a pin for pivoting in a support member of the hinge. The support member includes a bearing surface that is substantially parallel to the base. The pin member includes an end that makes pivotable contact with the bearing surface.

Printing apparatus with pivotable duplexing unit

A method of adjusting the spacing between a portion of a printhead and a portion of a media support in a printing system. The spacing is easily adjustable at least at the time of manufacture for locking a printhead at a selected distance from the media support. A rotatable variable spacer is abutted against an anti-rotation rail to lock into place the printhead at the selected distance.
