A portable radio is provided that performs an impedance measurement to determine a radio frequency (RF) load type connected to an antenna port of the portable radio. The portable radio includes an impedance measurement circuit and a tunable matching circuit operatively coupled thereto through an RF switch A sweep generator injects an LMR frequency sweep to the RF load during non-transmit or non-receive time slots for the impedance measurement. The tunable matching circuit is configured as a radio frequency (RF) bypass during the impedance measurement, thereby enabling the impedance measurement circuit to directly measure the impedance of the RF load coupled to the RF port and identify the RF load as either a land mobile radio (LMR) antenna or equipment (wideband load). When the RF load is determined to be an LMR antenna, then the matching circuitry is tuned for the identified antenna. When the RF load is determined to be wideband equipment, then the matching circuitry remains bypassed.

Portable communications device and method for full duplex operation in a time division multiple access radio system. The method includes providing a switch for connecting one of a first voltage controlled oscillator and a second voltage controlled oscillator to a synthesizer. The synthesizer generates a first frequency when connected to the first voltage controlled oscillator and generates a second frequency when connected to the second voltage controlled oscillator. The method also includes controlling, using an electronic processor coupled to the switch, the switch to connect the first voltage controlled oscillator to the synthesizer for a first timeslot, and controlling, using the electronic processor, the switch to disconnect the first voltage controlled oscillator from the synthesizer and connect the second voltage controlled oscillator to the synthesizer for a second timeslot. The second timeslot is immediately adjacent to the first timeslot.

Full duplex operation of a portable communications device in a time division multiple access radio system

A device, system and method for transmitting one or more of annotations and video prior to a video call is provided. A communication device receives a request for a video call from a first communication device, of other communication devices. Prior to the video call being established, the communication device: determines whether a user of the first communication device is an authorized caller; and when the user of the first communication device is an authorized caller, transmits, to the first communication device, one or more of annotations received at the input device and video from a video camera. The determination of whether a user of the first communication device is an authorized caller is based on profile data associated with users of one or more of the other communication devices.

A device, system and method for public safety assistance detection is provided. The device comprises a communication interface; a location determining device; an input device; a memory storing keywords; and a controller. The controller implements: an assistance application; and at least one monitored application at which alphanumeric input is received using the input device, each of the assistance application and the at least one monitored application hosted by different respective servers. When the alphanumeric input is received at the at least one monitored application, the controller provides the alphanumeric input to the assistance application. When the alphanumeric input is received at the assistance application includes one or more keywords, the controller transmits, using the interface, at least a portion of the alphanumeric input to a server that hosts the assistance application, as well as a current location determined using the location determining device.
