A spin-stabilized projectile has a projectile body and a guide band being circumferentially mounted on an outer face of the projectile body. The guide band includes a plurality of axially adjoining partial guide bands. One of the partial guide bands is a first partial guide band made of copper, a copper alloy or another soft metal. One of the partial guide bands is a second partial guide band made of soft iron and axially adjoining the first partial guide band. A total axial length of all second partial guide bands is between 5% and 50% of the total axial length of the guide band.

Spin-stabilized projectile having a multi-part guide band and method of making the projectile

A spin-stabilized projectile adapted to be fired from a weapon barrel, includes a projectile body having a length dimension, a rear length portion, an ogive-shaped front length portion and an intermediate length portion situated between the rear and front length portions; a metal guide band circumferentially mounted on the projectile body; and an undercut provided circumferentially in the intermediate length portion to define an annular chamber with an inner surface of the weapon barrel during travel of the projectile in the weapon barrel upon firing for effecting a pressure equalization of propellant gases flowing past the metal guide band to center the projectile within the weapon barrel.

Spin-stabilized artillery projectile having gas pressure equalizing means

A gas generator adapted to be disposed in a rear part of a projectile for increasing the flight range thereof, includes a housing defining a combustion chamber and having a bottom and a longitudinal axis; a fuel accommodated in the combustion chamber; an outlet opening provided in the housing bottom for passage of combustion gases generated in the combustion chamber upon combustion of the fuel; and a plastic fuel-supporting tube extending axially from the outlet opening into the combustion chamber. The plastic material of the fuel-supporting tube is selected such that upon combustion of the fuel aided by a gas pressure of a projectile propellant and by a drag effect, the fuel-supporting tube is deformed and driven out of the outlet opening.

Gas generator for a projectile

A lightweight training bomblet provided with a housing made of cardboard or plastic. Such training bomblet should be easily assembled and be able to withstand the high acceleration forces generated during transport into a target area. To prevent undue deformations of the bomblet housings made, for example, of cardboard, during air transport and the resulting premature ignition during ejection from a carrier projectile, both cardboard or plastic housing covers are connected with one another by means of a pre-tensioned connecting arrangement and their abutment faces are pressed against the end faces of a tubular housing shell, with the abutment faces of the housing covers possibly additionally containing a holding and sealing arrangement which is pressed into or against the end faces of the housing shell. Preferably the holding and sealing arrangement is composed of an annular blade member which is cylindrical on its exterior surface and conical on its interior surface, thus providing, in the assembled state of the bomblet, high stability of the tubular housing shell and a good sealing effect. The connecting arrangement for the housing covers may be composed of an axially disposed screw connection in which a delayed ignition charge is disposed in a space saving manner.

Lightweight training bomblet equipped with axially tensioned housing

A bomblet carrier projectile for delivering training bomblets to a target area. A plurality of training bomblets are supported in layers within the projectile body, with each training bomblet having a housing made of at least one of paper and plastic. A plurality of supporting elements are disposed within the projectile body and stackable in the axial direction of the projectile body for supporting the training bomblet housings in the layers. A detonator is arranged in a frontal region of the projectile body. A gas passage channel is formed along the longitudinal axis of the projectile body. An ejector unit is disposed behind the detonator and includes an ejection charge for emitting ignition gases when ignited by the detonator that are passed through the gas passage channel for igniting the training bomblets and an ejection plate for ejecting the training bomblets from the projectile body, over a target area, in response to pressure generated by the ignition gases.

Bomblet carrier projectile equipped with lightweight training bomblets

A large-caliber carrier projectile for transporting a payload, with the projectile including an ejection charge and an ejector plate for ejecting the payload from the carrier projectile over a target area. To overcome the problem of the ejector plate colliding with individual bomblets of the payload, and thus causing considerable interference with proper functioning or premature detonations in the air, the ejector plate is an eccentric center of gravity. Alternatively, the ejector plate may be segmented and composed of at least two separable parts which are separated by the action of centrifugal force after ejection from the carrier projectile.

A projectile includes a propellant charge and a nozzle opening provided in a rear projectile part and serving as an exit for propellant charge gases during flight of the projectile; a resilient rupturnable rubber or plastic sealing disc closing the nozzle opening for protection against environmental influences.

Seal for the nozzle opening of a projectile

A payload projectile including a carrier body having an ogival region in which a receptacle for an ejection charge is provided. A perforated disc is seated immediately in front of the receptacle and a lifting ring screw closes an opening in the carrier body at the forward tip of the ogival region. A chamber, reserved for an igniter, is defined between a rear face of the screw and a front face of the disc and has radial dimensions wider than those of the seat of the disc so that the disc is movable forwardly toward the screw peripherally unimpeded in the chamber. The lifting ring screw is provided with a passage at least partially filled with a melting fuse and projections on the rear face of the screw so as to project into or in the immediate vicinity of the chamber, thereby to ensure that upon inadvertent ignition of the ejection charge in the absence of the igniter, upon movement of the disc toward the screw as a result thereof, hot gases from the ejection charge are able to pass along a path defined through and around the disc, melt the fuse and pass out of the carrier body without building up such internal pressure as might cause ejection of secondary ammunition provided rearwardly of the ejection charge.

Payload projectile for ejectable secondary ammunition

A segmented ejectable payload container is arranged to provide improved protection against axial separation of its segments during the firing operation. The container is formed as a hollow shell, with its outer jacket formed integral with a bottom end plate whose outer surface is recessed to receive an outwardly extending flange of an inner container jacket. The other end of the opposed jackets is removably closed by means of a threaded end plate. A second flange on the inner jacket is received in a corresponding recess of the second end plate when such end plate is in operative position. The interfaces between the flanges on the inner jackets and the recesses in the respective end plates are closed by means of a radially disposed seal. The depth of such recesses is chosen so that the outer surface of each end plate projects beyond the adjacent surface of the associated flange.

Container construction for an ejectable ballistic payload

An improved twist brake for the separable payload of a twist or spin-stabilized flare or smoke projectile is described. A pair of pivotable wings, secured at one end to a portion of a central shaft of the payload, is normally engaged by the inner surface of a guide shoe which prevents contact of the wing with the separable housing of the payload. Cooperable projections and slots on the guide shoe and the central support shaft prevent substantial axial and circumferential movement of the shoe, while permitting outward movement of the wings and the guide shoes when the payload separates from the housing. During such separation, the guide shoe is also separated from the wings so that the latter can pivot to their maximum extent to provide an optimum rotational braking action on the payload.
