An absorption/reflection exhaust muffler of multichamber design with an outer housing and two inner half shells, in which the exhaust gas duct is impressed or pressed in, and which form the inner partitions of the individual chambers. The two inner half shells are designed as a prefabricated, inner half shell system with a bent together edge section, which is pressed in into the outer housing. Compensation of expansion during thermal stresses between the inner half shells and the outer housing is possible as a result. The outer housing may optionally be an outer shell manufactured according to the winding technique, i.e., a wound outer jacket with two flat outer bottoms, or it may comprise two outer half shells manufactured according to the half shell technique.

A process for preparing catalytic converters, especially bodies of motor vehicle catalytic converters of modular design, by pushing monoliths and a surrounding support jacket into prefabricated tubes, whose cross section essentially corresponds to the profile of the monolith plus an addition for the support jacket. An exhaust gas treatment device adapted to be connected into an exhaust line of an internal combustion engine comprises a porous body made of heat resistant material and having a plurality of conduits extending axially therethrough having an inlet end and an opposite outlet. The construction includes a closure member closing the inlet ends of at least some of the conduits. An additional closing member closes the outlet ends of at least some of the other of the conduits. A catalyst mesh material is positioned in at least some of the conduits which have open inlet ends. Exhaust gases flow into the inlet ends which are open. In some if not all of the cases, the opposite ends of the open inlet ends that is the outlet ends are closed so that the gases must flow through the porous walls of the porous body and move into contact with the catalyst mesh material of the others of the conduits and flow out the ends of those conduits which are open. The member which provides the closures for the individual conduits at the respective inlet and outlet ends may comprise simply plug elements or fixed or rotatable end members at each end which as closure plate parts arranged in substantially a checkerboard pattern so that alternately adjacent squares of the pattern are opened.

A filtering and post-combustion device for waste gases, particularly of internal combustion engines, is designed with a plurality of filtering elements which are mounted at equally spaced radial locations within a circular or oval housing and are radially transversable by the gas stream which enters and leaves axially through funnels. At the inner filtering elements, the outlet chambers are separated from the adjacent inlet chambers of the respective following filtering element by axially extending walls. Each individual filtering element comprises a perforated retaining shell, a filter body, such as a wire mesh, permeable to gas, and a perforated supporting wall.

An exhaust muffler has a monolithic honeycomb catalyst mounted within an oblong shaped casing. An inlet conveys exhaust gas into one end of the casing and an outlet flows the exhaust gas away from the other end. At its end spaced from the casing the inlet is generally round while its end connected to the casing has a shape conforming to that of the casing. The sides of the inlet taper outwardly providing a smooth surface for the flow path to the casing. A flow dividing member traverses the flow path in the inlet between its ends for dividing the flow without causing any turbulence.
