A clocked electronic energy converter having an electronic switching element, at least two electrical energy storage devices, a terminal for connecting an electrical energy source, a terminal for connecting an electrical energy sink, a clock generator for controlling and operating the electronic switching element during switching operation and an adjusting unit which provides a first signal for adjusting the power-to-be-transmitted by the energy converter, is disclosed. The clock generator is designed to adjust the power-to-be-transmitted by the energy converter in a first output range by means of the switch-on time of the electronic switching element and, in a second output range in which the power-to-be-transmitted by the energy converter is less than in the first output range, to adjust the power-to-be-transmitted by the energy converter in the second output range by a combination of the switch-on time and the supplemental switch-off time, the supplemental switch-off time being constant.

A clocked electronic energy converter may include an electronic switching element, at least two electrical energy storage devices, connections for connecting an electrical energy source and for connecting an electrical energy sink, a clock generator for controlling the electronic switching element and a switch-on time unit for generating a first signal for the clock generator, which switch-on time unit sets the power of the energy converter to be transmitted in a first power range by the first signal. The voltage converter itself includes an inductance, a diode and a switch. A control apparatus, which produces a square-wave signal as a control signal to the switch of the apparatus for power factor correction, includes an I regulator. This produces a first component of the on time of the control signal. In order to react to short-term power demands in the load circuit for example on ignition of the discharge lamp, an electronic ballast furthermore may include a power determining apparatus, which is coupled to the control apparatus, with the control apparatus being designed to vary the control signal as a function of the power consumed in the discharge lamp.

The auxiliary manipulated variable of the second control loop represents the first reference variable of the first control loop, the first time constant being smaller than the second time constant by at least a factor of 10, and the first manipulated variable represents the duty factor of the output signal of the inverter.
