A process for continuous casting of slabs or other metal products of elongate cross section, for example made of steel, in which a molten metal is poured into a cooled mold, and the externally solidified product is continuously extracted from the mold and guided in a secondary cooling zone downstream of the mold. To obtain a cast product exhibiting predominantly equiaxed solidification, the product extracted from the mold is subjected to electromagnetic stirring in segment zero of the secondary cooling zone by at least two stirrer-rolls incorporated into the segment zero.

Process for the continuous casting of flat metal products with electromagnetic stirring and implementation installation

In the continuous casting of flat metal products with a submerged nozzle having lateral outlets, a mold is equipped on each of its long sides with a pair of linear inductors that generate a magnetic field that travels horizontally over a width of the long sides and are placed on sides of the nozzle. The inductors are mounted in pairs to slide vertically over the height of the mold, and by being moved, pass from a low stirring position, located level with the outlets of the nozzle, to a high stirring position, located level with a meniscus of the liquid metal in the mold, and vice versa. Also, on passing from one position to the other, the connections for the inductors to the phases of the power supply are modified to reverse the direction of travel of the magnetic field of only one of the two inductors of each pair.

Adjusting the mode of electromagnetic stirring over the height of a continous casting mould

The invention concerns a continuous casting ingot mold equipped with an immersed nozzle () provided with lateral outlets () opposite the small sides () of the ingot mold, and whereof the pattern of molten metal flows can be naturally in single loop or double loop, or even unstable. The invention is characterized in that it consists in using sliding magnetic fields acting, at the nozzle, on the flows of liquid metal reaching the ingot mold through the nozzle orifices, said magnetic fields being generated by polyphase linear electromagnetic field windings (') arranged opposite at least one side of the ingot mold on either side of the nozzle, preferably opposite one large side and advantageously both, so as to set, or stabilizes, a permanent pattern in double loop mode.

Method and device for controlling flows in a continuous ingot mold

The apparatus comprises a submerged entry nozzle () having outlets in the main casting plane (P) which differ in their direction of output and fall within two categories (). The nozzle is associated with two inductors () opposite each other on each broad face () of the casting mold forming a gap which surrounds the nozzle and produces a traversing magnetic field covering the outlets of at least one category (). Elements are provided for adjusting the intensity of the field or for moving it so as to be able to change the distribution between the outlets of the total flow of molten metal. Implementing the invention makes it possible to adjust at any time that fraction of the metal flow which is directed toward the free surface () with respect to that, main, fraction directed toward the bottom of the mold.
