A process for manufacturing particles including a stereocomplex of poly-D-lactide (PDLA) and poly-L-lactide (PLLA), including the steps of: extruding a melt including 30-70 wt. % of PDLA and 70-30 wt. % of PLLA through an sc-PLA formation zone in a twin-screw extruder, wherein the formation zone is operated at a barrel temperature above the melting temperature of the PDLA and PLLA and below 220° C.; wherein the sc-PLA formation zone is followed by a finishing zone which is operated at a barrel temperature below 160° C.; wherein the finishing zone is followed by the end of the extruder which has a die-head resistance of 0; and recovering solid stereocomplex particles from the end of the extruder. The stereocomplex particles find use in various applications, e.g., in fracking fluids, as filler, as nucleating agent, in particular in the molding of semi-crystalline PLA, or as a starting material for the manufacture of sc-PLA products.

Process for manufacturing particles comprising polylactic acid

A method for preparing a shaped polylactide article including stereocomplex polylactide and to a shaped article obtainable by the method. In particular the method comprises melt mixing and solidifying poly-L-lactide (PLLA) and poly-D-lactide (PDLA) homopolymers in a weight ratio whereby one of the homopolymers is in excess, subsequently solid mixing the so obtained blend with additional homopolymer, and shaping the obtained solids mixture.

Continuous process of forming aliphatic polyesters The process includes continuously providing cyclic ester monomer and polymerization catalyst to a continuous mixing loop reactor (CMLR) having static mixing elements and operated at a temperature between 100 and 240&#xb0; C. to form a pre-polymerized reaction mixture. The conversion is between 40 and less than 90 wt. %, wherein the cyclic ester monomer comprises lactide having a free acid content lower than 50 milli-equivalents per kg. The pre-polymerized reaction mixture is continuously provided to a plug flow reactor that is a static mixer reactor having static mixing elements and is operated at a temperature between 110-240&#xb0; C., wherein the reaction mixture is polymerized to a conversion of at least 90%, to form polymer wherein the flow ratio of the CMLR and the plug flow reactor is between 1.5 an d50. The process includes continuously removing polymer from the plug flow reactor devolitizing the polymer.

Process for the continuous production of polyesters

A method for manufacturing poly(2-hydroxyalkanoic acid) included the steps of a) mixing a cyclic diester of a 2-hydroxyalkanoic acid and a polymerization catalyst, b) polymerizing the cyclic diester to form poly(2-hydroxyalkanoic acid) in liquid phase, c) adding a phosphoric acid ester as a catalyst deactivating agent to the liquid phase, d) applying a devolatilization step to the liquid phase, and e) allowing the poly(2-hydroxyalkanoic acid) to solidify. The catalyst deactivating agent is added after the devolatilization step is applied. The method results in an improved melt stability of the manufactured polymer.

Poly(2-hydroxyalkanoic acid) and method of its manufacture

The invention relates to a method for the removal of the cyclic diester of a 2-hydroxy alkanoic acid from a vapor containing said diester, wherein the vapor is contacted with an aqueous solution so that the diester dissolves in said solution. According to the invention, the method is characterized in that the solution is an alkaline solution, preferably having a pH above 10. The problem of the formation of slurries of the diester in the aqueous solutions can be prevented by the present invention. The method can be applied with great advantage in the production or conversion of lactide.

Method for removal of the cyclic diester of a 2-hydroxy alkanoic acid from a vapor

A process is disclosed for preparing an organically modified layered double hydroxide having a distance between the individual layers of the layered double hydroxide of about 1.5 nm and comprising an organic anion as charge-balancing anion, the process comprising the steps of: (a) preparing a precursor suspension comprising a divalent metal ion source and a trivalent metal ion source; (b) solvothermally treating the precursor suspension to obtain a double layered hydroxide, wherein an organic anion is added before or during the formation of the layered double hydroxide of step (b), or following the formation of the layered double hydroxide, so as to obtain the organically modified layered double hydroxide, with the proviso that deoxycholic acid is not the sole organic anion.
