The solubility in solvent media, notably alcoholic media, of the beta-hydroxy acids ('BHAs'), notably the chemical skin peeling agent salicylic acid, is markedly enhanced by solubilizing same in the presence of at least one alpha-hydroxy acid ('AHA'); higher potency, more concentrated BHA skin peel products are thus formulated.

The present invention relates to compositions containing at least one salicylic acid derivative and at least one cosmetic, dermatologic, pharmaceutical, etc. active agent, where the salicylic acid derivative increases, enhances, etc., the efficacy of the active agent, as well as to methods of making and using such compositions. The invention further relates to a method for enhancing the efficacy of active agents with these salicylic acid derivatives.

Disclosed are cosmetic compositions containing water, at least one non-polar and/or polar oil, and an emulsification system comprising a polyoxyethylene oxide C12-C24 fatty acid ester; a sucrose fatty acid ester of vegetable origin, and a glyceryl and/or sorbitan C12-C24 fatty acid ester, and methods of making and using the compositions.
