The invention comprises a system and method for reducing a shot noise component of the Angle Random Walk Noise in a fiber optic sensor by providing a first optical amplifier prior to the photodetector of the sensor to increase the power seen at the detector. An optical amplifier and second detector may be provided to detect a source sample, which can be useful in reducing RIN noise. Optical isolators may be added at the optical amplifiers to prevent rear facet emissions from the optical amplifiers from affecting sensor signals. A coupler with an isolator, amplifier and detector may be provided to receive a sample of the facet emissions from the first optical amplifier, which may be subtracted from the sensor signal at the detector so as to eliminate the facet emissions from the sensor signals. Polarizers may be provided prior to each detector to further eliminate emissions.

Angle random walk (ARW) noise reduction in fiber optic sensors using an optical amplifier

The invention is directed to an apparatus and a method for reducing noise, in particular RIN noise, in optical sensors, in particular fiber-optic sensors. The optical sensor produces a sensor output signal representing a physical quantity to be measured and also contains a first noise component, which is detected by a first detector. A separate detector detects an input light noise component of the input light source of the optical sensor and produces a second noise component. The second noise component is electronically processed and time-delayed by a filter by a time delay which substantially corresponds to the time delay experienced by the sensor input light traversing the optical sensor. The time-delayed processed signal is then subtracted from the sensor output signal to produce a reduced noise optical sensor signal corresponding to the measured physical quantity.

The invention relates to the field of fiber optics, and more particularly to birefringence in single-mode fibers. The sensitivity of a fiber optic sensor coil for a current sensor may be increased by winding the sensing fiber, without torsion, around a current-carrying wire to form the coil, wherein the pitch angle of the fiber may be selected to result in a phase shift due to Berry's phase of circularly polarized light propagating through the fiber. Preferably, the pitch angle may be approximately 60&deg;.

A reduced minimum configuration (RMC) fiber optic current sensor (FOCS) is proposed which includes a sensing coil or sensing region, a light source and an optical path arranged between the front output of the light source and the fiber optic sensing coil/region. At least one quarter wave plate is disposed between the optical path and the sensing coil/region for converting linearly polarized light beams into circularly polarized light beams propagating through the sensing coil/region. The circularly polarized light beams propagating though the sensing region experience a differential phase shift caused by a magnetic field or current flowing in a conductor proximate to the sensing coil. A light detector is located at the back output of the light source and produces an output signal in response to return light intensity transmitted through the light source. The return light intensity is a measure of the magnetic field in the sensor coil/region. The magnetic field may be produced by an electric current flowing through a wire, wherein the sensor coil can be wound around the wire. Electronics is described which minimizes effects caused by changes in the environmental conditions.

A system and a method for determining a satellite antenna attitude are disclosed. Radio signals from a satellite, such as a GPS satellite, are received by a plurality of coupled antenna elements forming an antenna array. Local attitude values of the antenna array and/or the antenna elements with respect to a reference plane are determined using a shaft encoder or gyro, whereas a carrier-phase antenna attitude is determined from the received radio signals. The array and/or array elements are rotated over a predetermined angle and a correction value of the antenna attitude is determined from a time-averaged difference between the local attitude values and the carrier-phase attitude values.

A fiber optic sensor with a digital signal processing system and a method of using a digital signal processing system with a fiber optic sensor is disclosed. The system digitally samples the output signal of the fiber optic sensor at a frequency which is an integer multiple of the modulator drive frequency and multiplies the sampled output signal with predetermined sine and cosine coefficients corresponding to the (fundamental) modulator drive frequency and at most the second, third and fourth harmonic thereof. This simple system can maintain a constant modulation depth and modulator phase shift and provide sensor output data over a wide operating range of the fiber optic sensor. The fiber optic sensor can be employed, for example, for rotation rate and magnetic field measurements.

An interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG) system includes a fiber sensing coil and a semiconductor or rare-earth doped fiber light source emitting light with an associated light source intensity. The source has a front output and back output. An optical coupler is attached to the front output for receiving said light from said light source and the coupler creates two substantially equal intensity light beams for simultaneous transmission into the sensing coil said coupler attached to the coil. The fiber sensing coil supplies return light to the coupler from said equal intensity light beams and the coupler combines and interferes the return light into a combined light beam. An optical phase modulator has a phase modulation amplitude, and the modulator coupled to the coil. An oscillator is coupled to the modulator and produces a periodic voltage which controls the phase modulation amplitude. The combined light signal is transmitted through the light source and received by the detecting means coupled to said light source at the back output. Light detection means detect and convert the combined light beam into an electrical current. An electrical amplifier is coupled to the detector for converting said current into an electrical voltage. Alternating current voltage amplitude controller means is coupled to the amplifier, and controls the associated light source intensity. Electrical signal processing means is coupled to the amplifier and processes the voltage and provides an output signal proportional to the angular rotation rate input of the sensing coil.

Reduced minimum configuration interferometric fiber optic gyroscope with simplified signal processing electronics

The method and apparatus of establishing a vehicle azimuth provides for the automatic establishment of the vehicle azimuth for a vehicle positioning mechanism, and the continued improvement of accuracy, if desired. The method and apparatus accomplishes this by obtaining an assumed initial azimuth and an actual path azimuth as the vehicle passes in the vicinity of a first beacon. The actual path azimuth can be determined as between the first beacon and a subsequent beacon further along the route, or alternatively, the first beacon can be associated with a restricted, travel path or path segment having the actual path azimuth at the exit of the maintenance garage or ferry dock. The vehicle positioning system dead reckons its position from the vicinity of the first beacon and establishes an apparent path azimuth for the vehicle over the same path having the actual path azimuth. The difference between the actual path azimuth and the apparent path azimuth is the initial offset angle. The initial offset angle corrects the assumed initial vehicle azimuth to obtain the vehicle azimuth. As the vehicle traverses more distance between the adjacent beacons or alternatively along the restricted travel path or path segment, the accuracy of the initial offset angle improves because the dead reckoning calculation becomes more accurate. Furthermore, when the vehicle passes a subsequent beacon, any ambiguity with respect to the vehicle azimuth is corrected because the coordinates of the first and second beacons or, alternatively, of two GPS positions are known, and the actual path azimuth between the two beacons or positions can be used to offset the apparent path azimuth calculated solely by dead reckoning with the assumed initial vehicle azimuth.

Method and apparatus of establishing a vehicle azimuth

The sensing coil of a fiber optic gyroscope is wholly or partially surrounded by a gel. The components attached to the coil, such as the directional coupler(s) and polarizer, may also be wholly or partially submerged in the gel. The gel is contained by a rigid housing, in which the inner walls of the housing form a cavity for the coil and the gel. The cavity is filled with the gel, and the gel may be bonded to the inner walls of the housing. The gel remains stiff enough to maintain the coil in a fixed position relative to the housing, and soft enough to avoid any significant effect on the h of the coil over the operating temperature range. Furthermore, the gel can be loaded with particles to adjust the specific gravity of the gel, to modify the thermal properties of the gel and to increase the viscosity of the gel for improved vibration damping. In a modified form, the optical-fiber sensing coil is positioned on a mounting surface and otherwise surrounded by the gel. Alternatively, the optical fiber sensing coil is wound around a form that has a layer of gel on the coil-supporting surface.

The sensing coil of a fiber optic gyroscope is mounted by submerging the coil in a gel which surrounds and supports the coil. The components attached to the coil, such as the directional coupler(s) and polarizer, may also be submerged in the gel. The gel is contained by a rigid housing, in which the walls of the housing are spaced away from the coil. The intervening space between the coil and the innermost walls of the housing are filled with the gel, and the gel may be bonded to those innermost walls. The gel remains stiff enough to maintain the coil in a fixed position relative to the housing, and soft enough to avoid any significant effect on the h of the coil over the operating temperature range. In a modified form, the optical-fiber sensing coil is wound around a bobbin that has a layer of gel on the coil-supporting surface. A coating of adhesive is applied to the outside surfaces of the coil to hold the coil windings together in a stable configuration around the layer of gel.

A flexible coaxial cable assembly that can be efficiently packaged and shipped in segments and installed and assembled in the field. The cable includes strain insulators spaced along the length of the region between the inner and outer conductors to transmit stresses such as differential thermal expansion and contraction between the conductors. The inner conductors of successive cable segments may be rigidly joined to each other to prevent relative movement between the inner conductors of adjacent cable segments. The inner and outer conductors can be corrugated.
