In a method and system for opportunistic delivery of less-than-best-effort application data, a WIN network identified the elements of the wireless network servicing a specified mobile client. One or more elements of the wireless network servicing the specified mobile client monitor the connection state of a mobile client and notify the WIN network of connection state changes so that a chatty application running on an external application server may be notified by the WIN network to deliver packet data when the specified mobile client is connected to the network for some other purpose or when unused network resources are available. In this way, network resource overload caused by chatty applications is reduced.

Method and system for opportunistic delivery of less-than-best-effort application data over communication networks

In one embodiment, the method includes encrypting, at a device, data with a first key, and forming a message that includes a device identifier and the encrypted data. The device identifier identifies the device. A signaling message is formed that includes a class identifier, the message and an action code. The class identifier identifies a group of devices to which one or more devices belong. The action code indicates the type of data, and may be part of the message. The signaling message is sent to a network, for example, a wireless network. The wireless network identifies and routes the message portion of the signaling message based on the class identifier. And, using the class identifier and perhaps a device identifier, the wireless network may signal the device to change an operating parameter.

Method of machine-to-machine communication

An access terminal having user applications identified by product keys used to determine a QoS level to be granted to invoked user applications for the establishment of connections by an access network. The access terminal invokes the user applications, identifies the product key of the invoked user applications and determines a quality of service (QoS) level to which the invoked user applications are to be granted. The user applications may be formed into preferred and non-preferred categories with preferred user applications generally having a higher QoS than the non-preferred user applications. Access network connections using a high QoS are established from the preferred user applications to preferred servers of the access network. Connections from the non-preferred user applications are extended, using a lower QoS, by the access network to servers of a public data network.

Method and apparatus for providing quality of service level in broadband communications systems

A portable wireless network gateway aggregates bandwidth demand of different devices operating under different communications protocols. Network connectivity is provided by encapsulating data from the different devices to make the data appear to be data native to a single network. For example, the single network is a cellular wireless network. The different communications protocols include but are not limited to IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.3, USB, cellular wireless protocols, Bluetooth, RS-232, and IEEE 11.1R.

Portable wireless gateway

An IP Packet Access Gateway (IP PAG) system manages an IP bearer path between communicating IP endpoints. The system includes an IP PAG having a first IP bearer connection termination for terminating a first bearer connection with a first IP endpoint, and a second IP connection termination or terminating a second bearer connection with a second IP endpoint. A call control entity is associated with the IP PAG and communicates call control instructions thereto. The call control instructions include instructions for logically concatenating the connections into an active IP bearer path extending between the first IP endpoint and the second IP endpoint. A bearer traffic IP packet handler in the IP PAG moves bearer traffic IP packet payloads over the active IP bearer path.
