A drive mechanism for a door operator comprises a drive member and a driven member. The drive member is adapted to be operably connected between a motor assembly for rotating the drive member and a door closer assembly rotating with the driven member. The drive member and the driven member both include a protrusion. The driven member protrusion moves in the free space defined by driving surfaces of the drive member protrusion. Rotation of the drive member from a first angular orientation to a second angular orientation causes rotation of the driven member for powered opening of the door. The driven member protrusion moves in the free space without engaging the protrusion surfaces when the door is opened manually and allowed to close.

Door operator

A drive mechanism is provided for a door operator, comprising a drive member and a driven member. The drive member includes a protrusion, the edges of the protrusion forming first and second driving surfaces which define a free space of at least about 90&#xb0; there between. The driven member includes a protrusion, the sides of the protrusion form a first and a second driven surface, respectively. The drive member is adapted to be operably connected to between a motor assembly for rotating the drive member and a door closer assembly rotating with the driven member. The drive member and the driven member are disposed for relative rotation in substantially the same plane such that the driven member protrusion moves in the free space defined by the driving surfaces of the drive member protrusion. Rotation of the drive member from a first angular orientation to a second angular orientation in a direction toward an adjacent driven surface causes rotation of the driven member for powered opening of the door from the closed position to the open position. The driven member protrusion moves in the free space without engaging the protrusion surfaces when the door is opened manually from the closed position and allowed to close.

A touch bar () exit device () comprises a retractor element () disposed in the housing () for substantially restilinear movement. The retractor element () connects the touch bar () and the latch bolt () such that the retractor element () and the latch bolt () are moved toward the retracted position in response to movement of the touch bar (). An electrically energizable locking mechanism () in the exit device () includes a reciprocating plunger () moving transverse to the retractor element (). When energized, the locking mechanism () is operative to move the plunger () to the projected locking position to prevent retraction of the latch bolt. A time delay circuit is connected to the locking mechanism (). A switch () actuated in response to movement of the touch bar () is connected to the time delay circuit for starting a predetermined time interval for temporarily delaying deenergization of the locking mechanism (). When the time delay circuit interrupts power to the locking mechanism (), the plunger () moves allowing the latch bolt () to move to the retracted position.

A transverse retaining plate in the lever handle shank fits in a circumferential groove on the inside of the handle body and holds the lever handle on the shank. A key cylinder in the body handle has a bible which fits in a longitudinal slot in the handle. A resilient block is disposed in the slot in a position between the bible and the shank hub to hold the cylinder in position. The block also serves as a spring, biasing the retaining plate toward the groove.

A latchbolt has an adjustable backset made possible by the selection of one of a plurality of insets to interfit with the latchbolt actuator stub. The insets provide a selection in the distance between the actuator work shoulders and the end of the stub. A sleeve telescopes over the latchbolt tailpiece to hold the inset in position.

Exit device has auxiliary bolt which when held in by door strike permits a blocking leg to prevent unauthorized forced retraction of main latch bolt. Normal operation of device by panic bar pivots blocking leg out of the way and then retracts main latch bolt.
