A drill string sub for a rotary steerable drilling system wherein a flow diverter is configured, which flow diverter is configured rotatable about a drill string longitudinal axis at a relative rotation frequency relative to the drill string sub, to preferentially direct drilling fluid into a selected azimuth segment which is stationary relative to the flow diverter. A downhole data unit is configured to provide an information signal representing downhole data. An encoder operatively connected to the flow diverter to modulate the relative rotation in accordance with the information signal for transmitting information representing the downhole data to be detected uphole.

Rotary steerable drilling system, a drill string sub therefor and a method of operating such system

The invention provides a control system and method for limiting vibrations in a tool string system, comprising a relatively heavy rotatable device, such as a pump system or a bottom hole assembly, connected to a long rotatable tool string driven by a drive system. The control system comprises feedback of both torque and rotational speed signals to correct the set rotational speed. An objective is to maintain the drive speed over torque ratio equal to the connected tool string impedance. A secondary objective, for lower frequencies, is to approach and maintain a setpoint speed as drive rotation speed. The system may include a rotational speed sensor and a torque sensor, with the latter optionally replaced by a motor torque signal already available from a variable frequency drive (VFD) for an AC motor and the current safeguarding signal for a DC motor.

Method and system for damping vibrations in a tool string system

A method for steerable drilling is presented herein. The method includes inducing a drill string rotation modulation system to modulate a rotational speed of a drill string during each revolution of the drill string. The method also includes inducing a Measuring-While-Drilling device (MWD) to transmit repeatedly measured orientations of a Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) between the drill string and the drill bit to the drill string rotation modulation system to steer a drill bit with a tilted toolface in a deviated drilling direction. The MWD divides each revolution of the BHA into a plurality of angular intervals, and transmits average percentages of time that the BHA rotates through the angular intervals to the drill string rotation modulation system to provide the modulation system with information about an angular orientation of the deviated drilling direction.

Steerable drilling method and system

The invention provides a control system and method for limiting vibrations in a tool string system. The system comprises a pump connected to a rotatable tool string driven by a drive system. A system and method for communicating an electrical signal from a first region to a second region via an electrically conductive wall between the first and second regions. The method comprises using a transmitter to generate the signal in the first region, using the wall or a segment of the wall as part of a transmission path for the signal between the first region and the second region, wherein the transmitter comprises an output impedance and means for matching the output impedance and an impedance of the wall determined by an electrical property of the wall. The system comprises a first region separated from a second region by means of an electrically conductive wall, wherein the first region comprises a transmitter for generating an electronic signal in the first region, which transmitter has an output impedance that matches an impedance of the wall.

Method for communicating an electrical signal

A method is disclosed for using an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system that supplies an electrical current such that a metallic structure () has a negative voltage of between 0.5 and 1.5 Volt relative to earth to power one or more electrical appliances (), the method comprising: &#x2014;providing one or more electrical appliances () which each have a pair of electrical contacts (); &#x2014;connecting one electrical contact () of each electrical appliance to the structure; and &#x2014;connecting the other electrical contact () of each electrical appliance to earth, thereby providing electrical power to each of the electrical appliances. It is preferred that the electrical appliances () are equipped with one or more DC-DC power converters () which are configured to enhance an electrical input voltage of between 0.5 and 1.5 Volt to an electrical output voltage of between 3 and 5 Volt.

Using an impressed current cathodic protection system to power electrical appliances

A system for control of automatic refueling of automotive vehicles parked alongside a fuel dispenser unit which allows for a customer to control a refueling procedure without having to exit the vehicle. The control system includes a processing unit, control operating units, operating units and a communications system which is located within the vehicle to be refueled. The communications system has the capability to start, monitor and finish the refueling procedure by transmitting and receiving data signals which concern the refueling procedure such as signals which start the refueling procedure and signals which interrupt the procedure. The data signals are received by the from the vehicle into the processing unit where the signals are processed. The processed data signals are directed to control operating units. The control operating units then direct operating units in carrying out operating functions which are necessary to automatically refuel the vehicle.
