A memory controller () is adaptable to scaling of a system clock frequency, to enable another device () to access a memory (), and has a part for outputting control signals having some timing characteristics not entirely scalable with scaling of the system clock frequency. In response to an indication of a change in a frequency of the system clock, the memory controller adapts the part autonomously to enable it to output new digital memory control signals synchronized to the changed system clock and which also have the non scalable timing characteristics. This avoids the need for the processor to adapt the memory controller. Hence the adaptation can be carried out more quickly, leading to less disruption to other parts of the system and means the frequency scaling can be carried out more often.

Dynamic frequency memory control

A device and a method for managing power consumption of a plurality of data processing units. A scheduler () schedules a first process step for a first data processing unit () consuming a high power within a first deadline and a second process step for a second data processing unit () also consuming a high power within a second deadline. The scheduler further schedules the first process step and the second process step such that the two process steps do not occur concurrently thereby reducing the peak power draw from a power supply while preserving deadlines. This is particularly beneficial in battery-operated equipment, such as portable electronic multimedia devices, since peak power drain has been found to be an important factor in determining the battery capacity.
