An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas pathway that receives exhaust gas from the engine, a temperature sensor configured to generate a temperature signal associated with a temperature of the exhaust gas at a position along the exhaust gas pathway, and a reductant source. The system also includes first and second injectors in fluid communication with the reductant source. The first and second injectors are configured to inject reductant into the exhaust gas pathway at first and second rates. The system also includes a first treatment element positioned downstream of the first injector and within the exhaust gas pathway, and a controller in communication with the temperature sensor. The controller is configured to receive the temperature signal from the temperature sensor and adjust at least one of the first rate or the second rate based at least in part on the temperature signal.

An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas pathway configured to receive exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine, a first treatment element positioned within the exhaust gas pathway, the first treatment element including a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) element, a first injector configured to selectively introduce ammonia gas into the exhaust gas pathway upstream of the first treatment element, a second injector configured to introduce diesel exhaust fluid into the exhaust gas pathway downstream of the first treatment element, and a second treatment element positioned within the exhaust gas pathway downstream of the second injector, the second treatment element including a SCR element.

A DEF system for use with an internal combustion engine, the DEF system including a primary flowpath extending between a first inlet and a first outlet, where the first inlet is open to and configured to receive exhaust gasses from the internal combustion engine. The DEF system also includes a secondary flowpath including a second inlet open to the primary flowpath downstream of the first inlet and upstream of the first outlet, a second outlet open to the primary flowpath downstream of the secondary inlet and upstream of the first outlet, and an injector assembly configured to inject DEF into the secondary flowpath.

An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas pathway configured to receive exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine and a first treatment element positioned within the exhaust gas pathway such that the first treatment element is close coupled to the engine. The first treatment element includes a NOstorage element. A first injector is configured to selectively introduce a first reductant into the exhaust gas pathway upstream of the first treatment element, and a second injector is configured to introduce a second reductant into the exhaust gas pathway downstream of the first treatment element. The system includes a second treatment element positioned within the exhaust gas pathway downstream of the second injector, and the second treatment element includes a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) element.

An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas pathway configured to receive exhaust from the engine, a diesel particulate filter (DPF) element positioned in the exhaust gas pathway to capture particulate matter from the exhaust, and a regenerator operable to increase a temperature of the exhaust that passes through the DPF element. The system also includes a controller configured to selectively operate the exhaust gas treatment system in a first mode in which the regenerator is inactive such that a temperature of the exhaust is within a first range, a second mode in which the regenerator is activated to increase the temperature of the exhaust to a first target temperature beyond the first range, and a third mode in which the regenerator is activated to increase the temperature of the exhaust to a second target temperature greater than the first temperature.

An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas pathway configured to receive exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine and a non-thermal plasma generator positioned in the exhaust gas pathway. The non-thermal plasma generator is configured to increase a proportion of nitrogen dioxide in the exhaust gas. The system also includes a first treatment element positioned in the exhaust gas pathway downstream of the non-thermal plasma generator and a second treatment element positioned in the exhaust gas pathway downstream of the first treatment element. At least one of the first treatment element or the second treatment element includes a combined selective catalytic reduction and diesel particulate filter (SCR+F) element.

A method of treating exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine includes sensing a temperature of the exhaust gas with a temperature sensor, comparing the sensed temperature with a threshold temperature, injecting a first reductant into the exhaust gas at a first location if the sensed temperature is less than the threshold temperature, and injecting a second reductant having a different composition than the first reductant into the exhaust gas at a second location if the sensed temperature is greater than the threshold temperature.

The system further includes a second treatment element positioned downstream of the second location.

An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas pathway configured to receive exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine, a first ammonia injector configured to inject ammonia into the exhaust gas pathway at a first rate, and a first treatment element positioned downstream of the first ammonia injector. A second ammonia injector is positioned downstream of the first treatment element. The second ammonia injector is configured to inject ammonia into the exhaust gas pathway at a second rate. An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas pathway configured to receive exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine, an ammonia source, and a first ammonia injector in fluid communication with the ammonia source. The exhaust gas treatment system also includes a first treatment element positioned downstream of the first ammonia injector and a second ammonia injector in fluid communication with the ammonia source and positioned downstream of the first treatment element. The second ammonia injector is configured to inject ammonia into the exhaust gas pathway at a second rate different from the first rate.
