Methods and systems for calibrating a hybrid vehicle system for simplified control of the powertrain to optimize fuel efficiency of the hybrid vehicle and for operating a hybrid vehicle powertrain accordingly. The optimization mechanism reduces the optimized control problem to a single degree-of-freedom. Accordingly, during real-time operation of the hybrid vehicle, the system is able to quickly identify and apply optimized operating settings for a particular driver demand and, in some implementations, to provide a particular rate of change of the state-of-charge of the battery of the hybrid vehicle.

Simplified control for optimized hybrid vehicle powertrain operation

A multi-layer control mechanism for optimizing performance metrics of a hybrid electric vehicle (e.g., fuel efficiency, drivability, NVH). A first layer generates a policy that defines target engine & motor operating settings for each of a plurality of possible driver demand inputs based on a predicted driver demand profile for a long-horizon period of time. A second layer determines a predicted 'short-horizon' driver demand&#x2014;based, for example, on historical driver data and one or more environmental sensor inputs&#x2014;and applies a corrective pre-adjustment to the operating settings of the vehicle in response to determining that a pre-adjustment is required in order to apply the target operating settings for the predicted driver demand. A third layer determines constraints to the operating settings required to comply with the additional performance parameters and limits the operating settings applied to the engine and motor(s) to feasible operating settings defined by the constraints.

Hybrid vehicle transmission control using driver statistics

A multi-mode, power-split hybrid transmission system having two planetary gear (PG) sets connected to one engine, two electric motors, one output shaft, and each other by several clutches, brakes, and direct connection elements. Depending on the specific location and actuation of the various clutch and brake elements, the multi-mode, power-split hybrid transmission system can be run in one of several modes (e.g. electric drive, power-split, parallel hybrid, series hybrid, electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT), generator, neutral, and the like).

An engine system uses data associated with at least one operating condition of an engine to set the engine system to an AI mode when the engine is in an SI mode 1) within first operating condition limits, and 2) when a rate of change of a first operating condition is within rate of change limits, maintain the engine system in the SI mode when the engine is outside of first operating condition limits or when the rate of change of the first operating condition is not within rate of change limits, set the engine system to the SI mode when the engine is in the AI mode outside second operating condition limits, and maintain the engine system in the AI mode when the engine is within second operating condition limits, wherein the second operating condition limits are different from the first operating condition limits.

Multi-mode advanced combustion engine with supervisory control

Methods and systems for controlling combustion performance of an engine during recompression HCCI combustion are provided. The method includes regulating a valve actuation timing and a fuel injection timing to cause a combustion phasing of at least one cylinder of the engine to approach a target combustion phasing, and estimating current combustion state information based on the combustion phasing. The current combustion state information includes at least one of a temperature, a pressure, and a pre-combustion charge composition associated with the at least one cylinder. The method further includes determining a target fuel injection amount, and determining whether the target fuel injection amount would require actuator settings that violate predetermined constraints in order to cause the combustion phasing to approach the target combustion phasing. A fuel injection amount is adjusted when the target fuel injection amount would require actuator settings that violate the predetermined constraints.

Fueling strategy for controlled-autoignition engines

Devices, methods, and systems including a controller for a hybrid system. The controller includes an electronic processor configured to receive inputs defining a current condition of the hybrid system. The inputs include an acceleration input and an engine speed input. The electronic processor is configured to determine a desired torque based at least in part on the acceleration input, determine an actual torque based at least in part on the engine speed input, and set a torque strategy to operate an internal combustion engine at a high efficiency level when the desired torque is different than the actual torque.

Torque reserve in a hybrid system

Systems and methods are described for on-line, real-time estimation of a residual mass in an engine cylinder during HCCI combustion. The residual mass is estimated based on an estimated residual mass for a previous combustion cycle. A value of a first performance variable for the first combustion cycle is determined based only on engine data measured by one or more sensors. A value of a second performance is estimated based at least in part on the estimated residual mass for the first combustion cycle. An adaptive scaling factor is determining for the first combustion cycle based on the determined value of the first performance variable and the estimated value of the second performance variable. An adjusted residual mass for the first combustion cycle is then determined based on the estimated residual mass for the first combustion cycle and the adaptive scaling factor for the first combustion cycle.

Real-time residual mass estimation with adaptive scaling

Methods and systems for controlling combustion performance of an engine are provided. A desired fuel quantity for a first combustion cycle is determined. One or more engine actuator settings are identified that would be required during a subsequent combustion cycle to cause the engine to approach a target combustion phasing. If the identified actuator settings are within a defined acceptable operating range, the desired fuel quantity is injected during the first combustion cycle. If not, an attenuated fuel quantity is determined and the attenuated fuel quantity is injected during the first combustion cycle.
