The present disclosure provides a method and system for supplemental processing of recorded historical data in real time to fill in gaps of lost data. A user who may be monitoring the data from human interfaces can immediately recognize an issue, quickly change one or more settings for parameters (including changing one or more of the parameters), and replay for reprocessing the recorded data to provide a revised output that can catch up to the processing of later current data without needing to halt operations. In at least one field of use, the invention can eliminate the need for restarting a complete drilling process to resynchronize the surface system when the system is not able to demodulate a valid bitstream, saving time and maintaining high drilling efficiency.

Telemetry replay

The disclosure provides a method and system to recover some or all of the data missing in types of gaps that occur in data streams received via telemetry. The gaps can be filled in real time to enhance operator understanding of current operations. For gaps created by special sequences sent via telemetry during a time interval that telemetry would be sending measurement blocks (MB) of data, the gaps can be filled using special MBs combined with MBs for a next time interval to create combined MBs, sent via telemetry, and extracted to backfill the gaps. For gaps caused by corrupted data, the gaps can be filled with data from overlapping MBs having overlapping data based on overlapping time intervals. For gaps caused by gap events, including different drilling rates of penetration, event MBs with sampling rates different than a predetermined sampling rate can be sent via telemetry.

Method and system for telemetry enhancement

A method for transferring data between a surface computer and a downhole assembly may include connecting the surface computer to a single data port in the downhole assembly, transferring data between the surface computer and a first while drilling tool through the data port, and transferring data between the surface computer and a second while drilling tool through the data port.

Method and apparatus for downloading while drilling data

A system and a method for associating measurements from a wellbore with times and depths is provided. Tools located in a wellbore obtain the measurements and provide time data used to determine the times. The tools and a surface clock may be synchronized. The times may be used to associate the measurements with corresponding depths of the wellbore.

A wellbore instrument system includes a pipe string extending from earth's surface into a wellbore. At least a portion of the pipe string includes a signal communication channel having a cable, such as an electrical conductor or an optical fiber. At least one wireline configurable wellbore instrument is coupled to the pipe string and has at least one sensor therein for measuring a physical parameter. The at least one instrument is in signal communication with the signal communication channel in the pipe string. The system includes a controller functionally associated with the at least one instrument and configured to initiate operation of the at least one sensor upon detection of a command signal.

Method and system for using wireline configurable wellbore instruments with a wired pipe string

A system and a method manage and use data related to a wellbore or a drill string. The system and the method may provide remote access to tools in a drill string using a network. In addition, the tools have access to the data. In a disclosed embodiment, the tools are able to automatically access the data needed to optimize or improve function of the tools. An example of the network is a wireless network where the tools may be monitored and/or controlled remotely by an application. A linking tool is optionally provided to communicate with the network and one or more of the tools.

System and method for managing and/or using data for tools in a wellbore

A wellbore instrument system includes a pipe string extending from earth's surface to a selected depth in a wellbore. The pipe string includes at least one of an electrical conductor and an optical fiber signal channel. A power sub including an electric power source is coupled proximate a lower end of the pipe string. At least one electrically powered wireline configurable wellbore instrument is coupled to the power source in the sub.

Methods and systems for pulse generation assembly that includes a plurality of staged valves operably coupled serially in a bottomhole assembly of a wellbore tool. The plurality of staged valves are operated in a substantially synchronized manner, thereby generating a series of pressure pulses. The signal strength of the generated pulse signal is multiplied by the number of staged valves in the series, and the pulse generation assembly of the disclosure is less susceptible to jamming, shock, and erosion. Further, by sequentially stopping at least one stage of the assembly and then synchronously rotating other stages, amplitude modulation is accomplished.

Various methods are disclosed, comprising obtaining a plurality of raw depth measurements for a wellbore; obtaining survey data about a bottom hole assembly; obtaining depth compensation information; calculating a plurality of compensated depth measurements from the raw depth measurements and the depth compensation information and one or more additional corrections for residual pipe compliance, tide, and rig heave; calculating sag angle and correcting the survey data with the sag angle; determining a high fidelity wellbore trajectory from the compensated depth measurements and the survey data; and then employing the high fidelity wellbore trajectory in various drilling, formation evaluation, and production and reservoir analysis applications. Depth compensation information may comprise at least one of weight on bit, a friction factor, temperature profile, borehole profile, drill string mechanical properties, hookload, and drilling fluid property. The surveys may include both static and continuous surveys.

Method of determining and utilizing high fidelity wellbore trajectory

Systems and methods cancel or compensate for an echo or noise in borehole communication. The systems and methods provide a downhole tool configured to provide borehole communication via mud pulse telemetry. The downhole tool pulses drilling fluid to generate a first pressure pulse and a second pressure pulse. The first pressure pulse moves upwardly with respect to the downhole component and is encoded with data associated a downhole measurement. A sensor is electrically connected to and in communication with the downhole tool. The first sensor is adapted to detect a characteristic of the second pressure pulse in the drilling mud. A ideal pressure pulse or a correction pressure pulse is generated by a downhole tool or a mud pulse modulator to reduce or cancel noise of the second pressure pulse.

Systems and methods for canceling noise and/or echoes in borehole communication

A system and a method for determining stretch or compression of a drill string is disclosed. Sensors are positioned along the drill string for collecting data for determining the stretch or compression. The stretch or the compression of the drill string may be used to calculate depths at which measurements are obtained by tools associated with the drill string.

A system and method for communicating with a downhole tool is disclosed. In one embodiment, a telemetry system for communicating with a downhole tool in a wellbore includes a first electrode. A modulated electric current flows from the first electrode through a formation to the downhole tool. The telemetry system also includes a downlink box, which provides the modulated electric current to the first electrode. The downhole tool comprises a sensor unit, which detects the modulated electric current. The telemetry system includes a second electrode that allows the modulated electric current to return to the downlink box. The telemetry system also includes an uplink telemetry, wherein the uplink telemetry does not comprise electromagnetic telemetry. In some embodiments, the downlink may be operated while mud pumps are turned off. The downlink may also be operated while the downhole tool is sending uplink telemetry by a method other than electromagnetic current.

Example wellbore telemetry systems and methods for transmitting signals between a surface unit and a downhole tool are disclosed. One example method transmits data between a downhole location in a wellbore and a surface location associated with the wellbore by measuring downhole data via at least one downhole component and generating a data frame containing at least a portion of the downhole data. The example method varies a telemetry bandwidth allocated to the at least one downhole component in response to the at least some of the downhole data corresponding to a special event and transmits the at least some of the downhole data to the surface location via the telemetry bandwidth allocated to the at least one downhole component.
