A breast support platform for an x-ray imaging system includes a housing having a compression plate and a front wall, and a heating system disposed at least partially within the housing. The heating system is configured to heat at least a portion of the compression plate, at least a portion of the front wall, or at least a portion of the compression plate and the front wall. In an example, the heating system includes a transparent conducting film coupled to an inner surface of the housing. In another example, the heating system includes a blower disposed at least partially within the housing, and the blower is configured to channel hot air across an inner surface of the housing.

A medical imaging system that includes a contoured radiation detector configured to receive radiation emitted from a radiation source after the radiation has passed through at least a portion of a patient. The contoured radiation detector includes a gate-wall end and lateral sides, including a right-hand side and a left-hand side. The contoured radiation detector may also includes a superior surface connected to the gate-wall end, right-hand side, and the left-hand side. The contoured radiation detector further includes a chest-wall surface, the chest-wall surface connected to the superior surface, the right-hand side, and the left-hand side, whereby the curvature is contoured to a chest wall of the patient. The system may also include an anti-scatter grid having a chest-wall surface with a similar curvature as the chest-wall surface of the contoured radiation detector.

An apparatus including an x-ray source and detector where the source is disposed behind the detector and the detector is configured with a hole through which an x-ray beam emitted by the source can be transmitted to target tissue is provided. During operation, the source emits an x-ray beam through the hole in the detector. The x-ray beam may then be incident on an area of a subject to be imaged and cause various reflections and/or absorptions. The detector can detect signals reflected by the subject and an x-ray image can be generated accordingly.
