A battery is composed of a positive electrode in which a positive electrode active material layer including a positive electrode active material is formed on a positive electrode collector, a negative electrode in which a negative electrode active material layer including a negative electrode active material is formed on a negative electrode collector, a separator provided between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and an electrolyte impregnated in the separator. The battery further includes at least one of a heteropoly acid and a heteropoly acid compound as an additive at least in one of the positive electrode, the negative electrode, the separator, and the electrolyte.

A battery capable of improving the cycle characteristics even if the thickness of an anode active material layer is increased is provided. The battery includes a cathode, an anode and an electrolytic solution. The anode has an anode active material layer on an anode current collector, and the anode active material layer contains a carbon material and has a thickness of 30 &#x3bc;m or more. A secondary battery capable of improving battery characteristics is provided. The secondary battery includes a cathodecontaining a cathode active material capable of inserting and extracting an electrode reactant, an anodecontaining an anode active material capable of inserting and extracting the electrode reactant, and an electrolyte containing a solvent and an electrolyte salt. At least one of the cathode, the anode, and the electrolyte contains a radical scavenger compound. The radical scavenger compound is a compound in which a group having a radical scavenger function exists as a matrix, to which one or more carboxylic metal bases or one or more sulfonic metal bases are introduced. Chemical stability of the cathode, the anode, or the electrolyte containing the radical scavenger compound is improved. Thus, at the time of charge and discharge, decomposition reaction of the electrolytic solution is easily inhibited.

A battery pack includes: a battery including a battery element covered with a packaging member, the battery element including a positive electrode and a negative electrode which are spirally wound together or stacked on one another through a separator; a protection circuit board for the battery; and a covering material collectively covering the battery and the protection circuit board. The covering material includes a shape-retaining polymer. The shape-retaining polymer contains an insulating curable polyurethane resin including polyol and polyisocyanate.

Battery pack and method for producing the same

A battery pack includes a battery including a battery element covered with a packaging member, a battery protection circuit board, a covering material, and a rippable portion formed in a part of the covering material. The battery element includes a positive electrode and a negative electrode which are spirally wound or stacked through a separator. The covering material collectively covers the battery and the battery protection circuit board. The rippable portion rips open due to a gas generated from the battery in the event of an abnormal condition to form a gas release hole for releasing the gas outside the battery pack.
