A honeycomb filter includes a pillar-shaped honeycomb structure body having a porous partition wall disposed, surrounding a plurality of cells which serve as fluid through channels extending from a first end face to a second end face; and a plugging portion provided at an open end on the first end face side or the second end face side of each of the cells, wherein the partition wall is composed of a material containing cordierite as a main component thereof, an average pore diameter of the partition wall is 20 to 30 μm, an average equivalent circle diameter of pores existing at a surface of the partition wall and having equivalent circle diameters exceeding 3.0 μm is 18 to 30 μm, and a number per unit area of pores existing at a surface of the partition wall and having equivalent circle diameters exceeding 3.0 μm is 400 per mmor more.

A manufacturing method of a plugged honeycomb structure including a plugging material preparing step of mixing a ceramic raw material, a pore former, a thickener, an organic binder, a dispersing agent, and water and preparing the plugging material which is slurried, to form the plugging portions, wherein the plugging material preparing step includes: a powder mixing step of mixing the ceramic raw material, the pore former, the organic binder and the dispersing agent each of which is constituted of powder, at predetermined blend ratios, a thickener mixing step of adding and mixing the thickener to a powder mixture obtained by the powder mixing step, and a kneading step of adding the water to a thickener added mixture obtained by the thickener mixing step, to perform kneading.

A pillar-shaped honeycomb structure including an outer peripheral side wall, a plurality of first cells provided on an inner peripheral side of the outer peripheral side wall, the first cells extending from a first end surface to a second end surface, each opening on the first end surface and having a sealing portion with an average void ratio of 4% or less on the second end surface, and a plurality of second cells provided on the inner peripheral side of the outer peripheral side wall, the second cells extending from the first end surface to the second end surface, each having a sealing portion with an average void ratio of 4% or less on the first end surface and opening on the second end surface, the first cells and the second cells being alternately arranged adjacent to each other with a partition wall interposed therebetween.

Pillar-shaped honeycomb structure and method for manufacturing same

A honeycomb filter includes a pillar-shaped honeycomb structure body having a porous partition wall disposed to surround a plurality of cells and a plugging portion provided at an open end on a first end face side or a second end face side of each of the cells, wherein the partition wall is composed of a material containing cordierite as a main component thereof, a number per unit area of pores which exist at a surface of the partition wall and which have equivalent circle diameters exceeding 3.0 &#x3bc;m is 1400 per mmor more, and, in a pore diameter distribution which indicates a cumulative pore volume of the partition wall, with a log pore diameter on a horizontal axis and a log differential pore volume (cm/g) on a vertical axis, a half-value width of a first peak that includes a maximum value of the log differential pore volume is 0.30 or less.

An outer periphery coating material being coated onto an outer peripheral surface of a ceramic honeycomb structure to form an outer periphery coated layer. The outer periphery coating material comprises: a particle mixture containing cordierite particles and amorphous silica particles in a mass ratio of from 40:60 to 80:20; and from 10 to 30% by mass of crystalline inorganic fibers in an outer percentage relative to the particle mixture. An average particle diameter of the cordierite particles is different from an average particle diameter of the amorphous silica particles.

A circumferential coating material which is coated on a circumferential surface of a honeycomb structure monolithically formed by extrusion, to form a circumferential coating layer, the circumferential coating material containing fused silica in a range of 20 to 75 mass %, containing a color developing agent in a range of 5 to 50 mass %, containing colloidal silica in a range of 5 to 30 mass %, and further containing a silicon based water repellent agent in a range of 1 to 10 mass % to a total mass of the fused silica, the color developing agent, and the colloidal silica.
