An intraocular micro-display (IOMD) implant includes an enclosure shaped for implantation into an eye, a micro-display, a base lens, and an adjustable lens. The micro-display is disposed in the enclosure and oriented to emit an image towards a retina of the eye. The base lens has a fixed optical power, is attached to the enclosure, and is positioned relative to the micro-display to reside in an optical path extending between the micro-display and the retina. The base lens is configured to apply the fixed optical power to the image. The adjustable lens is disposed in the optical path between the micro-display and the retina. The adjustable lens has an adjustable optical power that is adjustable in-situ to adjust a focal distance of the image projected by the IOMD implant after the IOMD implant has been implanted into the eye.

An intraocular micro-display (IOMD) system includes an auxiliary head unit. The auxiliary head unit includes a frame for mounting to a head of a user, a scene camera module mounted in or on the frame in a forward-facing orientation, a gaze tracking module disposed in or on the frame and configured to monitor an eye of the user, and an auxiliary controller. The auxiliary controller includes for: acquiring a scene image with the scene camera module, determining a gazing direction of the eye based upon gaze direction data from the gaze tracking module, identifying a sub-portion of the scene image based upon the gazing direction, and wirelessly relaying the sub-portion of the scene image to an IOMD implant within the eye for displaying to a retina of the eye.

An ophthalmic device includes an enclosure that is compatible for wearing in or on an eye. An adjustable lens is disposed within the enclosure. Driver circuitry is disposed within the enclosure and coupled to drive the adjustable lens and change its optical power. Built-in-self-test (BIST) circuitry is disposed within the enclosure and coupled to the adjustable lens. The BIST circuitry includes an impedance measurement circuit coupled to selectively measure an impedance of the adjustable lens. A controller is disposed within the enclosure and includes BIST control logic that measures the impedance of the adjustable lens with the impedance measurement circuit to determine a health status of the adjustable lens.

An intraocular micro-display system includes an intraocular micro-display (IOMD) implant and an auxiliary head unit for delivering power and image data to the IOMD implant. The IOMD implant includes an enclosure shaped for implantation into an eye, a micro-display to emit images towards a retina, an energy storage unit to power the micro-display, a charging antenna for wireless charging of the energy storage unit via a power signal incident upon the first charging antenna, and a data antenna to wirelessly receive the image data for driving the micro-display to emit the images. The charging antenna and the data antenna are implantable into the eye with the IOMD implant.

A contact lens system includes a shared antenna electrode, an accommodation actuator to provide variable optical power, and a controller coupled to the accommodation actuator and the shared antenna electrode. The controller including logic for arbitrating access to the shared antenna electrode between an impedance sensor and a communication circuit; selectively establishing an oscillator with the impedance sensor and the shared antenna electrode; correlating an oscillation condition of the oscillator to an accommodation setting; and adjusting the variable optical power of the accommodation actuator based upon the accommodation setting. An impedance across the shared antenna electrode varies based upon an amount an eyelid overlaps the contact lens system when the contact lens system is worn on an eye.

An apparatus with a built-in self-test includes a sensor electrode, an impedance sensor coupled to the sensor electrode to measure a test impedance of the sensor electrode as influenced by an external load, a secondary electrode disposed adjacent to the sensor electrode to inductively couple with the sensor electrode and influence the external load on the sensor electrode, a first switch coupled to the secondary electrode to selectively change a second impedance of the secondary electrode, and a controller coupled to the impedance sensor and the first switch. The controller includes logic for adjusting the first switch to wirelessly load the sensor electrode with the secondary electrode in a predetermined impedance state, measuring the test impedance with the impedance sensor while the secondary electrode is in the predetermined impedance state, and comparing the measured test impedance against a threshold impedance range to perform a self-test.

An eye-mountable device is provided that includes an eyelid occlusion sensor. The eyelid occlusion sensor is used to detect winks, squints, downwards glances or looks, blinks, or other eye-based gestures generated by the user. Based on the detected gestures, an optical power of an adjustable lens of the device may be changed or some other operations could be performed by the eye-mountable device. Such operations could include toggling the optical power of the lens between first and second power levels due to the user squinting, looking downward, or performing some other gesture. Additionally or alternatively, such operations could include setting the optical power of the lens to a first optical power unless the user is looking downward, in which case the optical power of the lens could be set to a second optical power.

Efficient gesture-based contact lens algorithms for human to contact lens communication

A voltage driver can be operated to power an electrowetting lens of an eye-implantable or eye-mountable device. The voltage driver includes a first charge pump that outputs a first voltage having a first polarity and a second charge pump that outputs a second voltage having a second polarity, where the second polarity is an opposite polarity of the first polarity. The voltage driver can be operated to charge the electrowetting lens by coupling the first charge pump to the electrowetting lens and, after charging the electrowetting lens, discharge the electrowetting lens by coupling the second charge pump to the electrowetting lens. In operation, charging and discharging the electrowetting lens adjusts an optical power of the electrowetting lens and can thus adjust an optical power available for vision when the electrowetting lens is implanted in or mounted on an eye.

An electrical cable assembly amenable to implantation into a body includes a flexible cable. The flexible cable includes a dielectric substrate, a conductor lead for conducting an electrical signal, a conductive barrier layer, and an overmold layer. The conductor lead is embedded within and surrounded by the dielectric substrate. The conductive barrier layer surrounds the dielectric substrate and encases the dielectric substrate and conductor lead in a cavity. The conductive barrier layer is a continuous material layer that is neither braided nor spiral wrapped and provides a hermetic barrier formed of a metallic or inorganic material. The overmold layer provides one or more of mechanical protection or strain relief to the conductive barrier layer.

The IOL also includes one or more mechanical-to-electrical transducers () that detect mechanical changes in the eye and, in response to the mechanical changes, output an electrical signal. An accommodation actuator () is electrically coupled to the one or more mechanical-to-electrical transducers, and in response to the electrical signal the optical power of the accommodation actuator changes.
