A surface-coated cutting tool comprises a hard coating layer that includes a TiAlN layer and is provided on a surface of a cutting tool body. In case the composition of the TiAlN layer is expressed by a formula: (TiAl)N, 0.10&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.35 (here, x is in atomic ratio) is satisfied. In the TiAlN layer, a high Ti band-like region is present in a direction at 30 degrees or less with respect to a line normal to the surface of the cutting tool body. An average composition X of the Ti component in the high Ti band-like region satisfies (x+0.01)&#x2264;X&#x2264;(x+0.05), an average width W of the high Ti band-like region is 30 to 500 nm, and an average area ratio St of the high Ti band-like region is 3 to 50 area %.

Provided is a surface-coated cutting tool including: a tool body () and a hard coating layer on the tool body (). The hard coating layer has an alternate laminate structure of A () and B layers (). The present invention is directed to a surface-coated cubic boron nitride sintered material tool including a cBN substrate and a hard coating layer formed on a surface of the cBN substrate and having an alternate laminated structure of A layer and B layer. The cBN substrate (sintered material) includes: a Ti compound, WC, AlN, TiB, AlO, and cBN. The A layer has a composition of (TiAl)N (0.4&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.7 in terms of atomic ratio). The B layer has a composition of (CrAlM)N (0.03&#x2264;y&#x2264;0.4 and 0&#x2264;z&#x2264;0.05 in terms of atomic ratio). A plastic deformation work ratio of the B layer is 0.35 to 0.50.

The present invention is directed to a surface-coated cubic boron nitride sintered material tool including a cBN substrate and a hard coating layer formed on a surface of the cBN substrate and having an alternate laminated structure of A layer and B layer. A peak of the grain size distribution of cBN grains in the cBN sintered material is present within a range of a grain size from 0.50 to 1.00 &#x3bc;m. The A layer has a composition of (TiAl)N (0.4&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.7 in an atomic ratio). The B layer has a composition of (CrAlM)N (0.03&#x2264;y&#x2264;0.6 and 0&#x2264;z&#x2264;0.05 in an atomic ratio). An X-ray diffraction peak of a (200) plane is present at a position of a diffraction angle of 43.6 plus or minus 0.1 degrees, and a plastic deformation work ratio of the B layer is 0.35 to 0.50.

In a surface-coated cutting tool, an A layer made of an (AlTi)N layer (0.35&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.6 by an atom ratio) and a B layer made of a (AlTiSi)N layer (0.35&#x2264;y&#x2264;0.6 and 0.01&#x2264;z&#x2264;0.1 by an atom ratio) are layered on a surface of a tool body in which at least a cutting edge is made of a cBN sintered body. A layer thickness ratio of the A layer and the B layer (t/t) is 2 to 5, an X-ray diffraction intensity ratio I(200)/I(111) as the entire hard coating layer is more than 3 and 12 or less, a full width at half maximum of a peak of I(200) is 0.3 to 1.0, the I(200)/I(111) of the A layer is 2 to 10, and a full width at half maximum of the peak of the I(200) is 0.3 to 1.0.
