Digital broadcasting for transmitting program data including at least one of digital audio data and digital video data with other information is carried out by using terrestrial waves. The program data, download data corresponding to contents of the program data, and reference information correlating the download data with the program data are multiplexing with each other. The multiplexing signals are transmitted over a specific frequency band.

A receive control portion activates each of VCOs, and then sets a reference dividing ratio N in the programmable divider. With each of the VCOs active, the receive control portion determines whether the PLL circuit locks or not based on a signal inputted during this time. Written into the second table is an optimal VCO for each pattern. The receive control portion determines the optimal VCO corresponding to the created pattern data referring to the second table. Receiver capable of selectively receiving signals at frequencies

A short wave broadcasting receiver which can receive accurately and stably the desired station is formed with a local oscillator which comprises a variable frequency oscillator, reference frequency oscillators, premixers and band pass filters, frequency converter and an 1F amplifier. By adding a frequency counter unit comprising a frequency counter block and digital display block, the received frequency can be digitally displayed stably and correctly by using a cheap low speed frequency counter.

The voltage across the segmental electrode and the common electrode is provided by the segment driving device only when the display controlling device is in a short-circuited condition.
