A method and apparatus for starting a cold internal combustion engine under optimum conditions. Engine r.p.m. is maintained to a desired value until either the car is started, driven, or the temperature of the engine reaches a predetermined value, whichever first occurs. During this time, the ratio between the air and fuel fed to the engine is kept at the optimum values corresponding to the prevailing engine conditions during this time.

Engine cold starting

A fuel supply device for internal combustion engines comprising a computer having a memory which stores an air flow quantity characteristic related to a pressure difference between the up- and down-streams of a throttle valve, an air flow quantity to pass the throttle valve and the throttle valve opening degree. A throttle valve actuator is moved by the computer for controlling an air flow quantity to be supplied to an engine. A plurality of sets of throttle valve opening degrees, air flow quantities or pressure differences corresponding to a variety of combinations between a desired air flow quantity and the pressure difference, throttle valve opening degree or air flow quantity at the present time point are read out of memory on the basis of the air flow quantity characteristic, and by an interpolation process the desired throttle valve opening degree, the air flow quantity or pressure difference at the present time point is computed to thereby adjust the throttle valve so as to be in a desired opening degree, the throttle valve opening degree so that the air flow quantity is to be at a desired value or the throttle valve opening degree so that the pressure difference is at a desired value by the throttle valve actuator. This is done in order to enable to a proper supply of an air flow quantity always appropriate to the operating status of the engine without using an air flow sensor. In case the change from the air flow quantity at the present time point to a desired air flow quantity is large, the estimated value of throttle valve opening degree is calculated from the desired value of pressure difference and desired air flow quantity and the throttle valve opening degree is adjusted into this estimated value or desired value.

Fuel supply device for internal combustion engines

The invention relates to a rotating mechanism of a throttle valve for a fuel supply device of an internal combustion engine. The mechanism has an actuator for opening the throttle valve upon depressing of an accelerator, a cam lever pivotally secured to a throttle shaft and having a cam set to open the throttle valve more than the movement of said actuator upon depressing of the accelerator, a throttle lever for coupling the cam lever to the throttle shaft, and an engaging member mounted at the cam lever side to take an engaging position or a nonengaging position of the throttle lever. In this rotating mechanism of the throttle valve, the engaging member can operate to take the engaging position with respect to the throttle shaft when the actuator becomes impossible to operate. Thus, the rotating mechanism can operate the throttle valve by the operation of an engaging member to take an engaging position or nonengaging position of a throttle lever having a cam set to open the throttle valve more than the movement of an actuator of a stepping motor or a DC motor for opening the throttle valve in response to the depression of an accelerator without using the actuator even if the stepping motor or the DC motor becomes defective to cause the throttle valve to become impossible to operate. The invention thus allows the vehicle to travel and to accelerate the increase in an air amount by opening the throttle valve more than the movement of a stepping motor as an actuator by the cam lever particularly when the vehicle is necessary to be abruptly accelerated in case like racing thereby preferably accelerating the vehicle.

A device for driving a stepping motor for use in a vehicle is disclosed. The device comprises a plurality of phase coils, a switching means connected to the phase coils, a pulse distributor circuit connected to the switching means for generating control signals thereby controlling the ON or OFF state of the switching means, a connection means for connecting the phase coils to a power supply source, and a current sustaining means connected between the connection means and the phase coils in common therewith.

Device for driving a stepping motor

Maintaining maximum power at wide-open throttle in a fuel injection type of internal combustion engine having a computer receiving input from (1) an accelerator pedal, (2) a pressure-drop sensor across the air intake-throttle, and (3) an engine-speed sensor, the computer producing output controlling an actuator that controls the position of the throttle and controlling a valve that controls the instantaneous amount of fuel being injected. The movement of the throttle towards its wide-open position is stopped just before it reaches that position where an accurate reading of pressure drop across the throttle can be and is being obtained. Substantially instantaneously, the airflow and proper air-fuel flow ratio are calculated for the stopped position while the throttle movement is checked. From these calculated amounts and the known relationship of the stoped position to the wide-open position, the computer then calculates what the airflow will be at the wide-open throttle position and then determines what the fuel flow should be, given the stored and desired air-fuel ratio. Then the throttle is advanced to its wide-open position, while simultaneously, the computer acts on the basis of the calculated airflow and fuel flow for the wide-open position to generate the flow relationship of fuel and air for the engine.

A circuit for driving a solenoid at a high speed with a choke coil, which has a pair of switching circuits alternatively turned ON and OFF by a transistor, a solenoid coil connected to one of the switching circuits, a resistor connected to the other of the switching circuits, and a choke coil connected in series with the switching circuit and in parallel with a power source. Thus, this circuit can abruptly raise an electric current flowing through the solenoid coil by utilizing the constant current characteristics of the choke coil and the current switching characteristics of the transistor.
