A rolling bearing unit with a rotation speed detection instrument having a hub with a plurality of inner race tracks, an outer race formed of steel material with a plurality of outer race tracks, rolling elements between the tracks, and encoder on the hub and a sensor supported in a mounting hole in the cuter race. A hardened layer is formed on the inner surface of the outer race and each portion where the outer race tracks are formed. An area of the inner surface around the mounting hole is not hardened.

In a sealed thrust bearing providing a case which is formed of a corrosion resisting material and fixedly fitted to an outer race, an outer seal ring which is fixedly fitted to the outer peripheral edge of an inner race, and an inner seal ring which is fixedly fitted to an inner flange, the outer peripheral edge of a first outer seal lip forming the outer seal ring is slidingly contacted with the inner peripheral surface of the outer cylindrical portion of the case. The end edge of a first inner seal lip forming the inner seal ring is slidingly contacted with the flat portion of the case. In the inner peripheral edge of the flat portion, an inner cylindrical portion is so formed as to cover the sliding contact portion between the end edge of the first inner seal lip. The sealed thrust bearing can prevent the sliding contact portions thereof from being worn greatly even if rain, mud or the like splash on them.

A pack seal apparatus formed with a first rigid ring having a radial leg portion and an axial leg portion in an L-shaped cross section, a second rigid ring having a radial leg portion and an axial leg portion in an L-shaped cross section, the first and second rings being coaxially arranged to be rotatable with respect to each other, a first elastic annular seal member secured to the radial leg portion of the first ring so as to be sealingly and slidingly engaged with the axial leg portion of the second ring, a second elastic annular seal member secured to the radial leg portion of the second ring so as to be sealingly and slidingly engaged with the axial leg portion of the first ring; the axial and radial leg portions of the first ring, the axial and radial leg portions of the second ring, and the first and second elastic annular seal members cooperating to define a closed annular space, and a pulser ring made of a separate thin metal plate mounted on the radial leg portion of one of the first and second rings and having a peripheral portion formed with a plurality of cutouts therethrough, in which the plurality of cutouts are arranged in a circumferential direction to be sensed as the pulser ring rotates.
