In a liquid crystal display device for receiving television signals by an interlace scanning method, number of the rows of pixels and of scan signal lines on a liquid crystal panel is increased to be the same as the number of valid scan lines of 1 frame of television signals. The original video signals to be inputted to the device are compressed to 1/2, and interpolating signals are added to every line of the compressed signals to form pseudo video signals. Shift register operation of a scan driver and the segment driver are done twice as fast as that in the conventional device, and start timing of the shift register operation of the segment driver is controlled to be shifted by 1/2 horizontal scanning period between the even field and odd field, while the pseudo video signals are applied to the segment driver. Consequently, to the rows of pixels to which original video signals are applied in the even field and to the rows of pixels to which interpolating signals are applied in the even field, interpolating signals and original video signals are applied in the odd field, respectively. Consequently, display can be carried out seemingly in accordance with the interlace scanning method.

A transmission type or projection type liquid crystal display device includes a light source and an active matrix type liquid crystal display panel provided with a thin film transistor arrangement. A shielding film is included for cutting off light incident upon the thin film transistor arrangement from the light source. Electrode terminals of the liquid crystal display panel and outputs of driving LSI circuits are connected to each other by flexible substrates with the connected portions between the electrode terminals of the liquid crystal display panel and the flexible substrates protected by a connected portion protecting resin. The invention relates to a drive apparatus for a liquid crystal display device. The voltage, to be applied to longitudinally and latitudinally arranged liquid crystal cells of the liquid crystal display device, is altered in polarity from field to field and from frame to frame, whereby the occurrence of flicker is prevented. The field discriminating device counts the numbers of lines in first and second fields by synchronizing a vertical synchronizing signal at a leading point of a field time. Thereafter the difference in the number of lines between the first and second fields is detected, the field times being thereby discriminated. When a video signal is erroneous, the field discriminating device provides a field discriminating signal, the level of which is changed alternately from field time to field time.

A front electrode is formed on one of the dielectric layers, and a rear electrode is formed on the other dielectric layer in order to apply a voltage signal across the electroluminescent element. An electron beam is applied to the electroluminescent element through the rear electrode to provide the electroluminescence at the position to which the electron beam is applied. A desired pattern is displayed on the EL display panel by properly controlling the application of the electron beam.
