Direct mapping of local director field of nematic liquid crystals at the nanoscale

Provided are intraoperative devices, the devices comprising a substrate having a plurality of discontinuous cuts formed therein, the plurality of discontinuous cuts being formed such that when the substrate is subjected to deformation, the substrate is capable of deformation beyond an initial state so as to achieve a first shaped three-dimensional state. Through design of the cut patterns in 2D, one can locally control the stretchability and elasticity within the substrate. The substrate can then be deformed into a 3D structure that can provide shape and support to reconstructed tissue in the desired regions while also minimizing operative time and cost. Also provided are related methods of using the disclosed devices; the devices can be used in autologous tissue donation procedures as well as prosthetic procedures.

A method of producing a nanocomposite film includes generating a bilayer film including at least a first layer of at least one nanoparticle and a second layer of at least one material and annealing the bilayer film. A uniform nanocomposite film includes a plurality of nanoparticles dispersed in a polymer matrix, wherein the plurality of nanoparticles form at least 60% by volume of the polymer nanocomposite film.

Nanocomposite films and methods for producing the same

The present invention provides a layered coating adhered to a substrate surface which conforms to a surface topography defined by the anisotropic chain-like silica nanoparticles on the substrate. The layered coating comprises a layer of anisotropic chain-like silica nanoparticles. The anisotropic chain-like silica nanoparticles comprise linked arrays of silica net-negatively charged nanoparticles, each linked array having at least one linear dimension of about 100 nm to about 1200 nm and the anisotropic chain-like silica nanoparticles each have a diameter of about 20 nm to about 80 nm. The substrate surface comprises surface active moieties carrying a net positive charge and the chain-like anisotropic silica nanoparticles are held to the surface by electrostatic charge. Advantageously, the layered coatings are transparent and superhydrophobic. Also provided are articles containing these layered coatings.

Omni-transparent and superhydrophobic coatings assembled from chain-like nanoparticles

The present disclosure provides compositions comprising anisotropic chain-like silica nanoparticles functionalized with hydrophilic groups. The anisotropic chain-like silica nanoparticles comprise linked arrays of charged silica nanoparticles, each linked array have at least one linear dimension of from about 100 nm to about 1200 nm and the anisotropic chain-like silica nanoparticles each in have a diameter of from about 10 nm to about 500 nm. These compositions are superoleophobic in the presence of water, e.g., when submerged in water. Also provided are layered coatings comprising these compositions, substrates comprising the layered coatings, articles comprising the layered coatings, methods of filtering a mixture of water and an oil using the compositions described herein, and methods of preparing a superoleophobic coating on a substrate using the compositions described herein.

Superoleophobic membranes for oil/water separation

Provided herein are fluid compositions comprising at least one silane having one or more hydrophilic groups, at least one silane having one or more fluorinated moieties, and stringed silica nanoparticles. Additionally, superamphiphobic surfaces resulting from coating and curing a fluid composition on a substrate are disclosed. Also provided are methods of forming a superamphiphobic surface, comprising coating a substrate of interest with the fluid composition and curing the coated substrate.

Superamphiphobic surfaces and compositions and methods of forming the same

A method and apparatus is disclosed wherein the movement of a droplet disposed on a nanostructured or microstructured surface is determined by at least one characteristic of the nanostructure feature pattern or at least one characteristic of the droplet. In one embodiment, the movement of the droplet is laterally determined by at least one characteristic of the nanostructure feature pattern such that the droplet moves in a desired direction along a nanostructured feature pattern. In another embodiment, the movement of the droplet is determined by either at least one characteristic of the nanostructure feature pattern or at least one characteristic of the droplet in a way such that the droplet penetrates the feature pattern at a desired area and becomes substantially immobile.

Apparatus for controlling the movement of a liquid on a nanostructured or microstructure surface

The present invention relates to a tooth-whitening composition comprising (i) a substantially water-insoluble and substantially non-degradable polymer matrix component capable of adhering to the surface of a tooth, provided that if the polymer matrix component is in non-solid form, it is solidifiable by chemical alteration; and (ii) gas- or liquid-filled pores embedded in said polymer matrix component, wherein at least a portion of said gas- or liquid-filled pores have at least one size dimension in the range of about 70 nm to about 5 microns, and wherein the gas- or liquid-filled pores and polymer matrix component possess a difference in refractive index of at least 0.1. The invention is also directed to a tooth-whitening system containing the above composition in combination with an applicator device. The invention is also directed to methods for applying the tooth-whitening composition onto teeth.

Aspects of the present invention describe soft imprint lithography methods capable of preparing structural features on surfaces. Disclosed methods include surmounting a deformable substrate, having an original form, with a composition, wherein the deformable substrate is capable of achieving at least one predetermined deformed state; predictably deforming said deformable substrate from its original form to the at least one predetermined deformed state; and transferring at least a portion of the composition surmounting the deformed substrate to a receiving substrate.

Patterning structures using deformable substrates

Disclosed are methods and systems for transferring dry or semi-dry nanoparticles onto a substrate. In one embodiment, this includes the steps of providing a roller comprising an elastomeric stamp; transferring nanoparticles in a dry or semi-dry state, and which contact the surface of a donor substrate, from the donor substrate onto the elastomeric stamp; and depositing the dry or semi-dry nanoparticles from the elastomeric stamp onto a receiver substrate by rolling the elastomeric stamp onto the receiver substrate. The substrate, in other embodiments, can have a relief structure.

Selective nanoparticle assembly systems and methods

A method for detecting blast induced pressure changes includes exposing a material, a contained solution, a membrane-bound solution, or a photonic crystal material, having a first optical property, to a pressure wave having a blast level. A change in the first optical property to a second optical property of the exposed material, contained solution, membrane-bound solution, or photonic crystal material is determined, and the extent of change corresponds to the blast level.

The invention concerns a method for making an article having a tunable adhesive, said method comprising applying strain to mechanically deform a substrate in at least one direction; applying a rigid coating layer on the substrate; and releasing the strain to form an article having a rippled surface.
